Why did we not get character creation like this?

With the millions that were spent developing this game I still don't understand why we got such skimpy character creation. I love the art style and we can make truly lovely characters. But the limits imposed just make no sense to me when I see what clearly CAN be done in MMOs now.

Dunno why, I would have done it for free. Game would be 100% better if I voice acted every character in the game, even the women.

Don't ask me but it would be nice to be able to create characters like that no 2 characters would look the same had that happen to a character earlier. The two characters looked exactly the same. There are a lot of things in my eyes that needs improving and I have been playing this game since Beta Tests where being done.

While that is awesome I honestly think it's a bit too much for how little people spend admiring their characters or other peoples.

EVE Online added very in depth character creation option but people still ended up looking mostly the same due to limitations on hair/facial hair choices. Also the good looking options will always be popular making more people draw to them.

All ZOS needs to do is add another 100 hair options, 50 facial hair options and 50 marking options with their character re-sculpting and we should see a pretty varied array of people

Simple. Because ZSO would violate copyright laws in that case.

Hopefully, character customization will become more detailed with the release of a future "barbershop" - be it an in-game shop or through Crown Store.

Some of the things that really annoy me are:
    - Male characters can have beard or adornment, but not both.
    - Female characters (and male characters) can have make-up, warpaint, or facial features (like freckles) - but not a combination.
    - All characters can have bodypaint or features (like freckles) but not both.

It would be better to have each feature separately - that way characters will also become more unique.

I saw an IGN video where they played that game and created the grossest thing I've ever seen in a video game. I wouldn't even want to think what the typical ESO troll will create with such "power".

Because they are two different games with different ideas?

ES character creation has never been the most in depth character creation tools.

They are however working on a barber shop, so I am sue there will be a few more options.

Granted that a few more options would be nice, but I have now come to the conclusion that there's nothing about this game that people won't complain about.

Does make you think actually..what do other people see from all your effort ?
Or is it a purely personal experience ?

If its about what you want other people to see as much as yourself.
Then eye colour and brow style really cant be seen from that far away.
They aren't going to be spending much time 1 foot from your face.

So I guess you have to organise options by how noticeable they are at a distance.
Body shape would probably be priority 1 in that regard I guess....followed by hairstyle ?

    Speak for yourself!

I've sent plenty of in-game mails complimenting folks on character and/or clothing
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Seems like we have soon a new profession in ESO: hairdresser!

But your character would change into something, oh well, more camp.

Simple answer - IT'S NOT KOREAN GAME
All mmo from Asia have very detailed creation process and very detailed appearances
including all additional stuff in game already that makes your character looks ...awesome? (for some)
You can compare all you want to every other mmo in the world but in the end how fun would it be
if every single one was built on same base ...with just different story.

Hell ...since when gamers got so picky and never happy :astonished:
Game can run smooth, improve quality, gameplay, content etc ...but still doesn't have X or Y from some other game
    ...seriously...

Damn, that character creation is amazing. It really puts ESOs and even FFXIVs to shame and gives a new perspective. I honestly wish there would be an MMO that could be successful in all fields; creation, battle system, quests, group and solo play etc.

Too many great ideas and developments are held back due to money issues. Money is the problem or the problem is the want for profit. If some people didn't want money for the sake of just having more, then we could really get things done properly. Too many people live for just money and don't really do much with it. Money is the illusion of wealth.

More games and projects outside of gaming could benefit incredibly if people dropped this way of thinking that money makes them feel safe or comfortable. Instead of looking to profit, you would have people looking to make the best of what they are currently working on. It would be a major change in the way we lived if this happened lol.

Look what your silly character creation made me write!

For one thing it's a trade-off. For every person who wants to be able to customise every little detail there are people who just want to quickly click through a few options to make a good looking for still somewhat customised character and then get on with playing and they quickly get frustrated with having to play with tons of sliders and options to get the look they want.

Look at Dragon Age: Inquision. That game has a huge amount of character customisation options and the major complaint about it when it came out was that if you don't like the defaults it's incredibly difficult to make a good looking character. That's partially due to the weird lighting, but also the complexity of the sliders which take practice and experimentation to really learn to use.

So designers need to strike a balance between offering tons of options for those who want them and making people who just want to make a distinctive character and then get on with playing feel like they're never going to get through all the tabs and sliders or will be stuck with a hideous mutant if they rush it.

    1. Fallout 4 will be the first game from this side of the ZeniMax house that will have more advanced character modeling.
    2. Character generation in ESO is a cousin of prior TES and Fallout games, and is a general improvement.
    3. ESO development started before 2011.
    4. Games do not have every feature that exists in all other games, across all brands. They have features that suit their development needs and goals, whether they are in other games or not.

    5. The character generation in ESO is a balance between flexibility, performance, complexity, expense, and need. There are a ton of factors that have to be considered, not the least of which is the amount of information that has to be sent to every client about the the characters on the screen and how much character customization the client can display, in real time, for a multitude of characters.

Black Desert really is an incredible game. I will be playing it. The funny thing is the character creator is what caught my eye at first but the combat and pvp looks good too. DAUM GAMES just needs to add a guild housing on top of their trade system and personal housing and it'll be perfect.

Wait.... OP is complaining about something new? Never would have seen that coming... Sarcasm aside, those are both the same link to a post from mid 2014.

The question is what does this actually add to the game. The majority of players rarely see much more than the backside of their characters. As an RPer, no amount of stuff they add to character creation could cover how I see my characters. Why bloat a system with more to load, more to code, and more to see if it will offer just something else for people to complain about?

The combat does look pretty cool. I like the 5 seconds CD on abilities, but you can still use them just at 20% effectiveness at 5 sec, 40% at 4 seconds, 60% at 3 seconds etc... A good way to reduce ability spam. Looks like a beautiful world, great character creation, dynamic combat (at first, until the "best" stuff is figured out).

BUT, it's a Korean game and they were unable to find a NA host for it (makes me wonder), and it will be F2P so expect all the grinding (at Korean levels, not piddly NA levels) and intense p2w cash shop a la Archeage.

    Nice character creation though.
