Suggestion for 1 handed and magic skill tree

This is my first real post so apologies if this topic has been done to death already. I have been bothered in this game by the fact it is not possible to wield just a sword and have your off hand free effectively. Especially as the female elf in the original trailers looks to be using that style. After playing the game for a while I have had a few ideas as how to implement this.

I believe that adding a new one handed weapon such as a "rune" or "prayer beads" which is equipped in the off hand instead of a shield would be the simplest way to bring in this skill and then have a separate skill tree that levels up when you have the rune equipped. The skills could focus on providing buffs such as increase wep/spell damage or they could provide cc abilities and ranged dps moves.

There are a few ways the runes could be used for example they could mimic the destro staff and have a shock, frost and flame runs which effects the appearance and effects of the spells or they could use poison/disease to make them a whole different style. I have also considered they could have a health, stamina and magicka runes which effects the way the spells work maybe for example have a skill "rune aura" which provides a damage shield with health rune, a spell crit aura similar to the dk flames for the magicka one and a weapon damage buff for the stamina rune.


Its just an idea and obviously would need a lot more development but it's an idea I would love to see implemented in game. What do you all think?

    Can't say I have seen anyone suggest this before. A Battlemage Skill Like doesn't sound half bad honestly. I wonder how Zenimax would pull it off though...

    I have seen it suggested before. Heck, I have suggested it before. Usually together with other weapon skill lines, like polearms or unarmed...

    One-handed melee weapon and rune/wand/prayer beads (those are new thoigh...), magically charged stamina-based melee attacks per weapon and magica based mid-range and AoE magic attacks per rune/whatever...

    It might work pretty well on a balanced build, and would be a wonderful addition to the game for any "spellsword" type characters...

    The prayer beads was an idea for a one handed healing weapon. Potentially they could have two new lines, runes for one handed magic based dps and prayer beads for one handed healing option. Just having these options would create a more diverse meta game as non Templar healers have a choice of weapons to heal and magicka based dps have a magicka based weapon that isn't the destro staff.
