Armor Look - made of what?

Is it just me or does some/most in game armor look as though it's made of paper or cardboard?
I'm wearing heavy armor (Imperial) & looking at it closely, it just looks very thin like a drawing. Is there a graphical setting in usersettings.txt I can change to give the shapes more depth?

Unfortunately I don't know how to change the looks of armor in the (user)settings (oh how much I wish I'd know!), but I can confirm that some armor looks odd..
F.e. both of my NBs are wearing a Bosmer style medium chest piece, and these look extremely thin, and.. like plastic. Only Coldharbour Ash Black makes it look more like leather, it's not too shiny anymore. When dyed with another color, it looks like my characters want to perform on Broadway tonight. Another example would be Ancient Elf light armor, plastic look all over, but not too "thin", although it's cloth, not leather.
Really weird, all this armor stuff..

Is it because of my shadow settings being very low/turned down that I don't see depth?
