A question for people that Role Play:

I'm not what you would call a role player. More than just playing the game that is, but I was wondering what role players thought about content in MMO's designed for them, is there anything?

Although it's not something I do myself I think all game types should be catered for. So my question is, do role players think they are catered to enough and what could be done to make it better?

I have some idea's myself, like interactive items such as beer pumps and mini games in bars and what not. Possibly even guild houses where you can set up events like an archery competition or a party.

Typically RPers are looking for these things:

Customization options. Anything that can better allow us to develop and express a particular character's appearance and background.

Housing. This is important in order to hold events, large and small, without being constantly harassed by trolls, etc.

Dueling those in the same faction! This is great in the event fights break out. (Not all RPers are a fan of this though.)
Dice rolling in-game. Most MMO's have a /dice or /roll function that will roll a virtual die and post results to group chat. ((Used for text-based combat in order to keep things fair and prevent one participant from refusing to lose. (Happens all the time.))

Name changes/Appearance changes. These are important in the case that you want to kill off a character, but do not want to start over. (One could kill off their character, change their name and alter appearance. Boom. New persona.)

Emotes are great, but the majority of expression is done through text. I don't consider this to be a huge thing.

Games in the past were much geared towards this type of play. I can remember GM's actually editing the world to accommodate RP guilds. (UO comes to mind.) This was typically met with anger by entitled folks who felt they were being neglected or treated unfairly, and I suspect that is why this is no longer done.

I think ESO has been pretty good at helping us out, but any game could do better.
There are always features that can be added/expanded upon. I hope that ZOS continues to help with this type of stuff.

    One more I forgot.

    Communication across factions.
Would be nice to be able to communicate cross-faction to facilitate some RP there.

I agree with the recommendations made and I think that ESO does a good job giving role players tools to work with.

I'd add musical instruments, and not just emotes, to my wish list. One game I played allowed you to link to music sheets converted to a text format so you and others could actually form a band and play pieces written for the different instruments. It added a bit of creativity and allowed some depth to your character.

I'd also add costume slots for each piece of armor to my wish list so you could truly customize your look without affecting your stats.

I'd like to see a mixture of wow and FFX with this. I liked the way that wow had it like a foreign language with opposing factions, but it would be good if you could learn that language a letter at a time, like you could with the ancients language in FFX.

    Thanks for the replys folks.

Wondering if you are console? Because you can on PC.

Wait dice rolling? So I can effectively play D and D inside an MMO... Omg why haven't I thought of this? Yeah sign me up.

    Ha. Yep.
Currently there are a few dice-rolling add-ons, but they cannot post to chat, so you're limited to taking someone's word on it.

Also, there are websites with dice emulators, we use those from time-to-time too.

May seem far-out, but this sort of thing is done every day in ESO.
We have large battles with simple dice-rolling to determine hit/miss fairly often.

    Yep. I'm on PC.

One thing we have done is get folks into a guild together cross-faction and take the say/emotes there.
Really cool for bar fights in Cyrodiil.

I like to see things that add life to the world of Tamriel. More areas opened up to players. Exploration, cultural events and such. I think those add a lot of RP value.

I'd love to see a "Story Teller" system like Star Wars Galaxies had, where you basically had a UI interface that allowed you to craft a full blown quest story, then use NPC tokens to place NPCs around a specific area, and fill them with loot and quest related items (All able to be uniquely named) and trade an item to another player for them to start the quest.

Plus that system had decorations and stuff you could place in the actual world (But then again, SWG had open world housing so it wasn't that far of a stretch).

Anyway, I think the Spellcrafting system will help add some RP value. I agree with you OP, that ESO is a good place to RP already, and I feel it can only get better with age.

If I remember correctly, we used /dice in guild chat at the conclusion of dungeon raids in WoW to determine who got what loot. I don't remember if it was part of the game system or an add-on that the guild used, but it definitely has its use.

Yep. I think that is why they originally included those in MMO's. Roleplayers may have hijacked this function.
