Lua memory limit since patch

spliffmaster2b16_ESO
"Lua is reaching its memory limit. You should consider disabling some addons and reloading the UI."

Before the patch 2.1 I had never even once seen this message with the same set of addons. Now I get that message all the time, even if I disable some addons. The game starts stuttering with severe framedrops after this message is shown. Ofcourse disabling all or most addons fixes it but why is this suddenly a problem?
I can't even run what I consider the most fundamental addons without getting this problem which means the game has become basically unplayable for me.

There is a setting for the lua memory you can bump up. If i recall correctly, it's in the usersettings file...

Thanks, that helps I guess. I'd like to understand tho why the memory usage has gone up so much since the last patch.

I don't think it did. I think they lowered it to make the game more friendly to PC players who don't have as much memory to use for the game.

Afaik the default limit was always 64 MB, same as now.

You can use the following command in-game (all one line--wordwrap breaks it into two) to determine how much Lua memory the game is using (in KB) and how much it has reserved (in MB), sourced from somewhere in the worldwidewebbiverse:

/script d(math.ceil(collectgarbage("count")).." KB memory used.") d(GetCVar("LuaMemoryLimitMB").." MB total Lua memory.")

You can also use the following command to set it:

    /script SetCVar("LuaMemoryLimitMB", "128")

Addons that process or store large amounts of data, like Master Merchant, tend to consume larger blocks of Lua memory than simpler addons. Consider disabling some addons you aren't actively using and striking a balance between functionality and trimness. Once Lua memory starts to reach capacity, you may notice some interface commands take longer than normal to execute... or fail entirely. Including interact and ability actions. ...Fortunately I discovered that in a safe spot in town.

I monitored LUA memory usage growths on PTS and compared it to live. The memory usage was growing much faster on PTS with the same add-ons and settings. I didn't compare without add-ons though. I'm assuming something changed behind the scenes and this results in a higher memory demand.

I had to increase my LUA memory to 1024 over the time. No big deal. :D

I stopped having LUA memory problems after I installed the Shissu's LUA Memory add-on.

In other news, I may write up an article on good LUA memory management for the ESO UI wiki if I find the time. Most add-on authors, I think, do not realize that LUA's garbage collection needs a little bit of help. Thus, many add-ons have massive memory leaks.
