Whether your intentions are noble or ignoble, randomly initiating trade with people without any communication first is bad. Pure and simple. It's the equivalent of being an aggressive telemarketer.

I agree. Had i not been in an enclosed space, I'd do what i do in cities and just ignore them.

    Why do people do it?

Yesterday running a dungeon some guy comes up to me and requests to trade. I ask him what he's actually wanting to trade and he had no idea. I closed the trade screen and went on my way and got a mouthful of abuse (was actually funny tbf) for being a spoilt brat.

My point is i suppose, it's helpful if people know what you're actually wanting to trade rather than just hit trade and hope for the best. After all, people aren't mind readers.

I've done the 'open trade window' more than once by accident when I meant to hit up with a guildie or friend - and just didnt' realize I was targeting the wrong player.

I try to apologize in chat (text; I'm on NA PC), but some folks don't seem to have it enabled.

Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

I had someone drop 696K gold into the trade trying to show off, luckily I was quick of the mark and someone lost a lifetimes worth of gaming gold that day, he chased and chased and chased after me trying to get it back, that'll learn him to try and troll / show off.

I hope you don't think this shows you in a good light , you stole 696k from someone . If I was that person I would have followed you to the ends of oblivion for that kind of money then reported you for the thief you are . Perhaps the person made a genuine mistake in trying to input a figure in the add gold , this is easy done . For you to take advantage of that then run away with his money says a lot more about your character than his . Shame on you .

Don't be daft, scams like this go on all the time - someone briefly drops some money in the box then retracts it while you are adding goods to trade for the now non-existent money that was shown.

Most people who randomly open trade with you uninvited are looking to scam you out of something.

Yeah and two wrongs make a right WRONG what he did was no better than the SCAM you described . Not every random trader is trying to scam you . I try a lot of random trading because having only 30 spaces in a guild store is pathetically low and there is no other way , other than selling to npc dealers for the pathetic pittance they offer you of disposing of goods . So don't try and defend this by saying most people are trying to scam in open trading so it's ok to scam them first . And in answer to your first question - no , I am not daft.

No, sometimes two wrongs do make a right. That is the best method to discourage people from repeating the first wrong.

You can tell when that happens. The person that's initiated the trade will cancel it pretty much straight away. This guy wanted to trade and is why I got verbals.

Oh yeah, I think everyone has done that at one time or another. It's usually obvious when someone did it by mistake, as they'll cancel it right away and not try to initiate it again.

As far as not being able to whisper someone, they probably have themselves set to offline mode. I do this myself when I'm grabbing my hireling mails every day so that I don't annoy people on my friends list with frequent "Ur-Quan has logged off with X" and "Ur-Quan has logged on with Y". I sometimes forget to set myself back to online after I'm done, though, and when I forget nobody can whisper me.

This happened to me for the first time yesterday. Some guy dropped an Orc Motif in a trade window. I declined several times before finally just accepting it without offering anything in return. I guess he got the point because he cancelled the trade and moved on. I am definitely not a fan of this behavior. If you want to sell or trade, then you need to join a guild, or use area chat just like everyone else. Don't force your shenanigans on me.

I totally don't mind those e-mails; in fact more than once I've whispered someone on my friends list (there are a LOT of folks on there that I totally can't recall why they are there) to compliment them on a choice of name.
