Closest lock picking mechanic to TESO is Oblivion or Morrowind (I forgot). Just try the simple chests, to get a feel for it, then when you get to the harder versions, you will have such epic lootz...

I did hear there is a lockpicking simulator but I am sorry I cant tell you where to find one. There are some pretty good tutorial videos on Youtube, check them out.

Hope it helps you, took me a couple of tries, but once you get the hang of it it works.

Like others have mentioned, practice a bit more to get a feel for it.

As you get better, you'll notice that just before the "wiggle" of the tumbler, you'll see it start to tilt slightly in one direction or another. When you see this movement, lift up on your mouse button and it should lock in place pretty easily.

In addition to the tilt before the wiggle, you'll hear a single click before the "rattling" that occurs during the wiggle of the tumbler. Again, when you hear that, lift off the mouse.

You'll get it, eventually Like Oblivion, it takes a bit of getting used it (I actually think this is much easier than Oblivion's was XD).

Thank you so much I had given up on it because kept trying in beta without any luck. Glad to hear it is a bit easier than beta. Will give it another try. I used to manage great in Oblivion but the time limit in ESO bugged me.
Also no time to practice, I spent like 36 lockpicks and then gave up.

I tried the simulations here and it worked ok so I am encouraged. I wish they would pin this article.

I have more trouble finding chests than anything, most of the ones I have seen are above my level.

I've tried the just let go of the button couple of times and find it kinda hard.

Method I use which seems to work quite well that you use left mouse button to push down the pin and once it starts to wiggle you press the right mouse button for the release.

I find that most people are pretty good and don't camp out while you're trying to get a chest. If you realize that you're probably not going to pick the lock in time, just start spamming the 'E' key to make sure that you're the one that gets another shot at it if you think someone is trying to yoink it from you.

I went through 33 lock picks to try to get in a locked house for a quest. There are no sounds and no movement of the pick. The tumblers wiggle or the pick breaks. That's it

Look at the Springs, they start to wiggle before the tumblers do.

There are only 4 lock positions on the slider, approximately 20% down, 40% down etc.

The pin sets on release of the mouse. It does not matter if you use the right or left mouse button, whatever one you can twitch the best on.

Ignore the timer, it will just cause stress. Just concentrate on setting each pin in line. Start from left to right or right to left as it makes sense for you. However, if your on top of a pin, start setting that one instead of taking time to go in a line, but it is better to go one after the other in a row.

Practice.

I could not pick locks until I watched a YouTube video. The trick is to release right before it vibrates. Now I can pick master locks.
