Stacking Abilities?

I'm new to the MMO scene and this may be a dumb question but what exactly do people mean when they talk of stacking abilities? How does it work?

    When you hear people talking about stacking abilities they are usually referring to constantly casting one ability. A good example would be; if you had a Sorcerer with all attribute points into Magicka. He/She would have very low health. Therefore, they have to cast a shield every so often to absorb the damage so it doesn't effect their health directly. There are more than one type of damage absorbing shields and they can all be "stacked" at once. Hope this helps ya and welcome!! ^.^
