I actually don't care for the fact that our hirelings send us emails... the email system should be used exclusively as ZOS to player and player to player communications.
I have a pretty robust courier concept for ESO... check it out here:

That was a pretty extensive read but personally your suggestion would not make me feel more involved in the stories unfolding. The whole idea was to make the game experience more "lively" by receiving emails after certain quests, they can be timed and the system for it already seems to be in place as the "hirelings" you mentioned already do this. But thanks for your input

I realized I didn't actually comment on your suggestion. I just got hung up on the "email" part. I actually really love your idea. I would love for quests to have a farther reaching impact than the immediate quest. Perhaps a duke sends for our help or a farmer we saved sends us his warmest thanks with a selection of vegetables from his crops.
One way they could achieve this is to have our hirelings send us messages that request our help. If we go to where they lead us, we can complete a quest or three with them/for them/to save them. It would sort of achieve what you're thinking, just the other way around.
I wonder how the whole dark brotherhood thing is going to be handled...
