Maybe it's not the fault of Zenimax? With all of the hack attacks these days I find it hard to drop blame solely on ZOS.

partially... While the original network was developed in the US, the way we use the internet now (world wide web) comes from Europe (cern)....

Well... http is just one (of many) application layer protocols used on the Internet and while I have nothing but respect for Mr. Berners-Lee he doesn't even come close to being the inventor of "the way we use the internet now"... that my friend was the result of many, many people coming up with many, many innovative ideas on how to leverage a decentralized IP based network for the betterment of mankind and the lions share of those came from the U.S. .

That being said.... we're still trying to teach our morons in Washington how to build websites and educate them on the fact that email isn't secure so bear with us.
