Question about the community

Hey guys i have been here since beta, and is it just me or are there more and more trolls and just plain rude people coming to the game? i saw a person ask a question and before i could type it i saw "go kill your self","git gud","cheat" and lastly "ask someone who cares" Now it may be my age but i remember when mmo communities helped one another, even back in UO where you could kill anyone at any time there where still loads of helpful people. I am wondering if anyone else has seen this or wish to share what they have seen. Also if you wish to flame or be rude i recommend not posting a reply, don't need you getting in trouble for your own lack of common sense.

Edit: the question they asked was "what is the best way to get armor, i'm lvl 8 in lvl 4 armor"

I have see the same question you have just asked for every game I have played in the last 20 years.

I think that the more relaxed with a game you get, the more you are able to see this kind of thing.

It's always there, but you are less likely to notice it if you are focusing on learning the new game.

The ONLY good thing to come out of WoW was a term for this kind of thing, previously newbie areas were filled with a smaller amount of people who had to jump through hoops to play online game. (having the internets 20 years ago meant you needed to really know what you are after and were willing to pay for it and put up with some terrible connections).

When WoW came out, the term "Barrens Chat" came with it. At this point, players had decent PC's and Internet was above the 56k level for most.

Barrens Chat - my definition of this is the highest area that the lowest common denominator can get to, populated generally with the younger players. This is the zone that they begin to learn the games mechanics, which unfortunately includes the various chat systems

MMOs have been like this forever, you are just looking back with rose tinted lenses. I remember some epic trolling in Ultima Online.

Agreed with both of those.
The unfortunate reality of any online interaction is that the players can hide behind their characters and screens. A good majority of the player base that makes up the troll population are probably not as toxic as they are while on the mic. However it still doesn't help when the chat channel is occupied with screaming kids, distorted music, and every profanity know to man (possibly a few new ones) which is the only constant. It's sad though when I have tried a few times to be polite and help newer players or just ask a question..... *shakes head*

What zone were you in? I find that there's a much higher percentage of jerks and trolls in the zone chat of the first zones you end up in after Coldharbour (not the starter islands: I'm talking about Auridon, Glenumbra, and Stonefalls). For some reason on PC NA server in my experience it seems like Stonefalls is by far the worst, although lately Auridon has seemed almost as bad.

At any rate, unfortunately there will always be some sad individuals who enjoy such antisocial behavior in online games. The best thing to do is try to be the helpful guy in zone chat so that hopefully your genuine helpful answers will balance out the trolls, and the newbies will have a good overall experience.

Selection bias. It certainly nice and fuzzy to think that in your time flowers were pretty and people were not all a**holes but the truth is in general quite the opposite.

I know the forums have gotten terrible. You have got to figure some people are here for help or information. Other people are here for entertainment. Those here for entertainment sometimes blatantly troll and sometimes they are just derailing threads with dumb one liners or off topic comments. You can tell pretty easily who is here for entertainment.

Combine that with the ever growing gap in writing etiquette. Facebook, texting, mass emails, etc. have made people unaware how silly it looks to post their disruptive comments, jokes, emotes, memes, etc.

Pointing out flaws in someone else's grammer and spelling or twisting what someone says is another BS move I see a lot to discredit an otherwise sound comment or just get a rise out of another person for entertainment. Either way its pure trolling, and it has gotten worse not necessarily with this game but just in general.

Gramma Nazis have been using this tactic on games forums since the year dot.

Then again so have kids in playground ever since the first playground.

We are not seeing anything new or changing, we are just looking at human nature

If you try to joke around with people on the forums you are Part Of The Problem! It's especially bad when ZOS employees have the nerve to try to connect with the regular folks on the forums by daring to interject with a little humour! Why, they should be fired for that!

For many people the forums ARE the game, they get tunnel vision (cant go to sleep till yet because someone on the internet it wrong! etc)

You are twisting my comments just like I mentioned above. I didn't say anything about not having fun. But when you have fun at someone else's expense you are a troll by definition. I've read many of your other comments. About half the time you make great points, use good sound logic, and try to help. The other half of your comments are insulting, disruptive, and sometimes derail the thread. I'm not going to argue with you about this and it doesn't matter to me how many of your pals agree with you just to be supportive friends. Ive done my research and you are wasting my time.

^That. Send em a whisper and answer their questions, help with what you can. That's what I do when I see someone trying to get real help in Trollfalls. I've also said flat out in zone for new players to ignore the chat and don't base their idea of the whole game on it.

It's sad really, because just 5 min time here and there by a GM would get rid of most of the problems.

Text without hearing the voice inflections or seeing the silly grin...what I say jokingly, someone takes as trolling :'( I don't know how to fix that problem.

I don't know, the stuff I saw in Glenumbra the other day will haunt me for minutes. Minutes, I tell you.

Nope, half the time I'm joking around. Most people get that and respond in kind. Some people (like you) don't and get upset about it. Part of a community is having fun. That includes things like joking around. Sometimes in a text format the tone of voice isn't as clear as it would be in person, and sometimes people are just a bit tone-deaf and simply can't recognize the tone that may be obvious to most everyone else reading the conversation.
