Question about spell damage/maximum magica

I always thought that spell damage scales off your max magica. So when you eat food it increases not only your max magic but your damage dealt by it. When u just ate some food I checked my stats and my max Magic went up but my spell damage stayed the same. How exactly does this work?

The spell damage stat is not increased - the tooltip damage of abilities is. Think of "spell damage" in your character screen as "spell power", and the damage dealt is then calculated from "spell power", maximum magicka and a bunch of strange coefficients.

So, food does affect your damage, in that the maximum magicka number goes into the calculation of each and every magicka consuming ability.

Ohhh that makes sense! Thank you! I wish consoles had an option for damage numbers to pop up. Would make things so much easier!
