Why the Profile Avatar is limited?

I want to know why is the reason the Profile Avatar is limited, would be nice to use my own picture on my Avatar, please, I wish to know, thanks

Probably due to the moderation that would need to be required, it seems the team is already spread thin.

Yeah, basically that. There's also a very minor security issue, where someone could deliberately link to malicious code, but moderation is probably the real answer.
