Take out the king or queen, everything goes. At least in Oblivion, there was an Elder Council that takes over once the Septims all died. Wouldn't a democracy be better than a monarchy in Elder Scrolls?

The Elder Council appoints a Regent... in ESO's case Clivia Tharn.

The Dark Elves appoint a new leader by decision of the great houses. I'm not sure how that appointment is handled.

The Nordic Jarls hold a Moot to elect a new High King.

The Daggerfall Covenant does the same, I think.

I'm not sure about the Redguards.

The Orcs iz made fer fightin' beat the snot out each other to decide who's worthy to rule.

The Khajiit rights of succession would be a spoiler.

The Bosmer have a monarchy, and resort to violence and eat the losers.

The Altmer have a large monarchy.

    The Argonians lick a tree.

I don't see the problem, really.

More like Ochlocracy if you look at the average citizen in ESO

Mostly true in real life, too. If the average IQ is 100 and even with 120 you arent really smart, then any real democracy = ochlocracy since ideal systems dont exist in real life.

I'd imagine a ruler of an individual faction would succeed the high ruler of the faction.

though this wouldn't work because high elves hate other races so aryenne dying would cause a split.

I do kind of wonder who would succeed Ayrenn in Summerset (even ignoring the Aldmeri Dominion as a whole). She's rather young, and no mention is made of any children. Does she have any siblings besides Naemon?
