Can we get names or titles (that the game will address us by) to choose from? There needs to be a more personalized feel to role-playing a character in the game. Since I've started my quest to save the entire world of Tamriel, I've been called "Hero", "Adept", "Dry-lander", "Mortal", "Vestige", "Slow-runner", "Stranger", and many other less-than-flattering names/things- yet never what I named my character.
I am well aware that its a tedious task to get the game engine to actually say the names we have chosen for ourselves, however, that doesn't mean the game couldn't be programmed to pronounce names that are already in the game. A plethora of titles and names to choose from that an npc will actually say to identify whom we are when asked.
Greater effort to make the experience in the game feel personal would move the accomplishments of the Elder Scrolls series leaps and bounds ahead of other competition. It's bad enough that we no longer get to feel like the lone hero in the Tamriel world. Now when an npc says "I need you to save my friend", they're more than likely talking to 50 other players currently in your vicinity that will all end up doing the same exact action you will be doing at that time. Basically, there is no reason to feel special in Tamriel. So the least you can do is allow us to choose a name we LIKE and can be identified by when being addressed.

✭I love it when I'm on an important quest, totally concentrated and all, and a nearby NPC calls out "THE HERO OF DAVON'S WATCH!", as if that would be even more important at this point^^ I remember that I even heard it somewhere beyond that Citadelle in the north of Coldharbour, that's kinda funny
Would be cool to actually have this title available in the title list.
But anyways, I know what you mean about "not feeling special" in Tamriel. Especially when you're on an important quest (such like I mentioned above), I can't stand it to see other players doing the exact same thing at the same time although this is (or is supposed to be) YOUR (my) task.. We're no heroes, we're just someone "who helped".
Sometimes, no, actually pretty often, I wish we would have the option to set certain places to be solo instanced.

But the "generic" forms of adress come with voice acting for NPCs. And carry on from there... same with most games that go for voiced dialouge. -shrugs- Its a MMO thing... someday there might be games that do better in this regard. Haven't seen any so far...

Kuroinu✭✭✭✭✭You know what I find more irksome than the generic nicknames we are given? NPCs who point out that you are the Hero of Coldharbour when you're doing Cadwell's Silver and Gold, it doesn't make sense lol.

I do think vestige is pretty d*mn insulting though, yeah i know it means "a trace or remnant of something that is disappearing or no longer exists" and referes to the missing "soul". But in biology when an organ is considered vestigial it is something that no longer has use!

Yes, I watch too much anime. No, it isn't cartoons. And some of it is better then most TV series anywhere. FMA is one of the good ones... though I much prefer the FMA-brotherhood, as it takes the story from the manga...

Second that. I get bothered by the number of NPCs who bring up that I'm, say, the Hero of Koeglin village...in the Aldmeri Dominion or the Ebonheart Pact, solely because the speaking NPC happens to be a Breton.

✭✭✭✭✭Yeah, it'd be nice if the titles were more than just a vanity rank. Like, if NPCs dialogue would slightly change if you're a Master Wizard, or a Fighters Guild Victor. You've worked hard to attain this title, why would you want to be called any less? I've beaten hordes of daedra, defeated demi gods, slain countless of the undead, and you refer to me as mortal? Please. It really breaks character when an NPC calls you "mortal", even though you're a Vampire. That bugs me a lot.0 -

Because in fact you're just as much of a hero as other 500.000 players are. Statistically, you're most likely to be a peasant-servant of a hero than a hero himself. Personally I play all my characters as "yeah, I took part in this great struggle..." instead of "I beat 'em all on mah own, worship meee!". But I guess that's a roleplaying thing... I like it this way, I most enjoy the feeling of my characters being a part of this beautiful world, and not the "lone hero" accolates of solo games...

Personally I play all my characters as "yeah, I took part in this great struggle..." instead of "I beat 'em all on mah own, worship meee!". But I guess that's a roleplaying thing... Can't you be both? I think its quite possible that the protagonist of a game can be a humble hero. When I played SWTOR I always had fun playing that character the best because everyone knows your character just saved the universe, you don't need to brag or browbeat them about it. Its petty. The Lone Hero has a very Greco-Roman feel to it, although fits in with many early cultures. From the Polynesians (Maui) to the Mayans (Xbalanque & Hunahpu) to the Greeks (Hercules, Perseus, Achilles, etc), to the northern Europeans (Sigurd, Sigmund, Beowulf) and so on. I could write thousands of pages on this topic but its laced through many cultures. I generally find what is more interesting is what this lone hero is about than the fact he's a hero though. I think where the Lone Hero can be unhealthy in gaming is when the player's identity gets too tied up with a fictional hero.
