Yes it does help level, but don't ask me to quantify it.

Many's the time when I've logged in to a "Carpentry increased to X" due to a trait research completing.

Keep in mind it's not just about the XP, or having the trait available....craftable gear sets require a specific amount of traits to be unlocked before you can craft the gear. For example the Seducer and Torug's Pact sets require the crafter to have three traits unlocked on each item to be crafted.
