Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

Can't say that I watch them myself but try to catch the headlines since they fall in the 2nd half of my workday but from what I've read, text chat is 99% of the time ignored or slightly acknowledged to basically say they have no plans as of yet but never actually saying yes we will, or no we won't, just deflections...

I promised myself I'd stay out of this since enough time has been donated to this subject, but man, I want text chat so I can listen to my game sounds while looking for a group of seeing if any good trade deals zoom by... But I guess that comes from the ex PC player in me but won't go back to it purely from a mental standpoint, me and PC gaming was a "dark" wow filled time of my life that i won't revert back to lol... And I would imagine a lot of this disjoint in effective communication comes from people similar to my situation... Been around for the text on PC, won't touch one, but wants the perks of a PC on console

Just an input on why PC doesn't have built in voice chat, it is because the third party application TeamSpeak is used
and is far superior to what might have been added to PC. imho

Remember my no is for text chat not to be rushed into IC, but done right.

The best teams on battlefield use.group tactics and mics.

Which is why I pointed at battlefield being an exception.
I love to leave area chat on and wander by the discussions.

Character build discussions, sales of items etc. Sometimes people will have questions, or need a hand with something and I just help out. The best part about area chat is that I don't always get to help before someone else offers.

I agree, helping the random people is fun. When I have time to lose I like to answer the questions I can. But then again, you can do the very same thing with text.

If you are the kind of person who can't tolerate other people being randomly rude or antagonizing, how would it be different with text chat?

People with soft skin would just have to turn two things off at the start of each game session.

I really don't know where you get that from my post. I never complained about anyone being rude or anything. Although hearing someone playing rap so loud the entire area hears it always gives me the urge to put on some very loud Dream Theater so that they hear what music really is...

Wanting to play with a guild has nothing to do with not wanting to play with other people. I meet people everyday and my friend list is always getting bigger. Wanting to play with a guild is more axed towards: I need to farm crypt of hearts and city of ash veteran on VR12+ to get some pieces of gear, and don't want to lose my time with a tank wearing full medium armor, a healer who can't stay out of red circles or a DPS who did not spend the required time to get some gear that fits his role or level.

I play with my friends because I know them. I know they won't rage quit after a few wipes. I know they know their jobs because I have seen them play. The hard instances require skill and cooperation, as well as gear. When I play with my friends, I know that they have what it takes, if I take a random group, I have no idea. Maybe they will be very good, maybe not.

If you don't have a guild, you have no means of communicating with the rest of the players in your area, quickly ask for help, or answer peoples' questions. You are only in contact with players when you enter a town, and then, you feel like leaving it because of the spam of music, annoying sounds, or everyone talking at the same time.

@TequilaFire I absolutely want it done right too but have you looked at guild online numbers vs total players in said guild? I looked at one that I'm in at peak time yesterday and there were 34 out of 389 online. And that's the most active guild I'm in by far.
Something has to be done with the IC patch cause when those guys who have quit log on when they see the update notification on their dashboard, if they still can't communicate effectively they may well uninstall. I'd be very interested to see the IC sales numbers if that's the case...
There are some temporary bandaids they could utilize if (hypothetically) they couldn't get it done in time that could possibly keep people playing for awhile.
LFG voice channels for level 1-5, 6-10 and so on. Zone chat, especially for cyrodill. Trade chat(though that's always gonna be a nightmare on voice). Each channel would have a few duplicates so they don't get clogged like area chat can and preferably with the ability to vote to kick trolls, lol. But if not, an unlimited in game ignore list would be the bare minimum required to stop organized trolls from blaring music or some such in each channel all day.

I want to get IC and I will get IC, I'm just afraid I'm going to be very disappointed and/or frustrated, not with the content, but with the inability to find a group, make friends, or otherwise communicate. As I mentioned before, my microphone broke and now I'm completely left out of any socialization. If we had optional text chat, even if my keyboard or phone would break, I'd still be able to type with the controller. It's about options and it's about effective communication.

You can use in line head phones made for cell phones. You can get a pair with built in mic for five dollars.
Its what I use and it works fine. Its stereo so at least its an upgrade from the packed in mic.

    Bwa ha ha ha.

No i am quite sure people logging in to ic will be quite happy with their choice.

Besides with all of the time between now and launch, if players haven't joined one of the thousands of guilds on ESO, it would be their own fault of they don't have anyone to play with.

I can't send a build invite to someone who doesn't even play the game.

Why should zos attempt to please a fan base that is apparently so fickle that a missing niche feature causes them to storm off and quietly await the addition of the unneeded feature?

The active player base is using voice chat. They are the ones voting in the only poll that really has weight. We are playing the game and spending crowns. People who have shut down are probably to fickle and disinterested to bother chasing their revenue anyway.

I would actually go further in suggesting that any revenue that might be wasted on translating and bug fixing text chat should be used to stabilize or improve voice chat.

    Cheers.

So using voice chat I just joined two new guild. One PvE and another PvP so I had to boot an inactive guild from the PC to console folks that's dead now.

Noticed the two new guilds are existing clan from Destiny and the other is a few small groups from other console games/clans. Rerolled a NB Tuesday who is now lvl 47 and ran a VR 4 to Vr11 last week all using what's in the game. No forums, no text chat, etc.

Sold some recipes and picked up 3 purple motifs and had others sent to me while I sent gear sets to others and made sets for noobs. One guy I just met offered to take me to his grind spots and so on and so forth.

Just sharing that there's different ways to play the game and text chat in all these scenarios never came up during discussion in 3 weeks which is about how long we've been arguing, debating, commenting and discussing this thread.

Don't miss out folks...ppl are working with what's there.
Also I updated my sig with a website for ppl who don't get good results using the grouping tools In-game.

It seems like you too have ignored just about what everyone has been saying....

So here let me break it down to you.... again...

No one was saying its impossible to join groups and trade, or join guilds. Nonone is saying that people arent doing the best they coukd with the options available.

WE HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT ITS NOT EFFICIENT AND SEVERLY LIMITED!!! AND THAT ADDINGNTEXT CHAT WILL MAKE ALL THOSE THINGS EASIER AND MORE EFFECTIVE!!!

I UNDERSTAND YOU. NOW UNDERSTAND ZENIMAX WHEN THEY SAY "NO".

I hope they understand no more money then too. Cause people are just gong to tell there friends oh don't buy this game the creators never listen to what the players need.

The players don't "need" it. Didn't you see the last post I was responding to...

If not, here it is again ⬇

So as you can see, tis merely a minor quality of life issue for a niche crowd of text fetishists that has no place in the console version.

Its only a niche crowd if your wilfully ignore the vast support behind text chat...which you have done.

Lol "Hey lets ignore the majority and tell them they are actually the minority"

Thats why your comments are viewed as a joke.

Vast support? You mean the 500 votes on this convoluted poll. Admittedly scewed by people who don't even play the console version. Some of them even going so far as to admit in this very thread that they voted yes just to shut the pro text pups up. Or did you skip over those posts? Aaaaaaaaannnd even if the 500 votes were legit, which they are not, that is 500 out of millions of players. Looks like a minority to me & should to anyone with basic math skills.

ESO is not millions of players deep on console. Also the official forums are not the only place lack of text chat is being discussed.

As of the middle of june, sales had reportedly topped 800,000 on PS4 and 600,000 on xBox One. So, you've got me there. They may not have topped 2 mil yet. I imagine they are significantly close if they haven't.

Not exactly because companies don't release the digital sales numbers. Those figures are likely from hard copy sales.

The actual figure is likely much higher.

As far as console is concerned players by a wide margin prefer phyiscal copies over digital downloads. Also there is little way to account for units purchased via either medium vs active and retained players.

When viewing 'players' as an indivdual who currently owes the game and is regularly playing it, one cannot simply look at the sells numbers and infer there are X units sold, thus there are X players. Because the sells numbers do not account for players who have moved on to other titles.

Furthermore, a company will rarely give an accurate number of the active player base, because it is, from a business stand point, in said company's best interest to inflate the number. This is why instead of saying over (insert timeframe) we've had Y unique account logins, they say (insert game) has over Z subscribers. Also that subscriber measure is normally taken right after major content releases which will always boost numbers due to players returning to play new content.

That's fantastic & well known. I appreciate you pointing this out but unless the number of active players has whittled down to less than 10k, 500 ppl don't mean squat. Which was the original point. Not that anyone in this thread is interested in acknowledging anyone with a differing opinions point...

This thread should be retitled "The World's Worst Amateur Debate".

I was refuting the point of there being millions of players, and later even with digital sales. I never included ties-in with those statements referring to the poll vs the player base. I merely stated the offical forums are not the only place lack of text chat is being discussed.

If you want a person to acknowledge your points, a first step would perhaps be to not put words in their mouth. Moreover when I take the time to refute a numerical claim within your point, that is infact an acknowledge.

NSS... the exact number in & of itself had nothing to do with the actual point being made. That point being the giant gap between players & poll participation. Now, for the sake of the discussion, does it matter if the gap is 500,000 to one or 100,000 to one? I don't think so. Not in the context of this discussion or for the point being made.

Now, some ppl could categorize your response as fecetious. I would never say such a thing, but some might. They might also say that the information that you gave goes without saying. Or say it was redundant as well as having nothing to do with the point of the post. That's what some might say. I wouldn't. What I'll say is: Thanks for taking the time to express your concern over a general number & attempting to correct the dull generality into an explanation on why the number cannot be made exact & remains vague & cloudy. And thanks for taking the time to refute a vague numerical value with the reasons why it's vague. Thanks a pantload.

    Lol...

    Don't sweat these guys.

I can't imagine any developer would take this thread seriously.

In one post, some people are making eloquent logic to explain their point of view.

Then two posts later, insults and derision get leveled at anyone who has the slightest deviation of opinion.

Text chat should be added to the game, but in the form of a second screen app with added features.

It should in no way clutter my HUD.

It should not have its bugs rolled into the imperial city patch.

    Thanks.

I believe that PC has text but no voice...however voice is coming.

But really, if voice is so much superior that text, why hasn't PC voice been implemented sooner rather than later given that ESO has been available on PC for over a year.

I guess one could argue that third party applications fill that void...but each player would have their own personal preference, so I don't see that standing up to much scrutiny.

I feel like a broken record now :(

Seriously, all ZOS needs to do is say "yay" or "nay". In plain English so there is no room for misinterpretation. And then I can move onto the next "issue" I have with ESO....gamer tags being displayed instead of my well thought out and (mostly) lore friendly character names.

Yes! I never put much thought into my gamertag because I only played single player games on console and everything that looked like it was from the English dictionary was already taken. I REALLY want my character name to be displayed in game.

So a definitive yes or no about text chat would be nice so we can move on playing or quitting or whatever.

Do you want a guild invite? I will personally introduce you to some very fun other players.

The offer is sincere. Let's just play this very fun game.

I really don't understand how people are completely incapable of finding people to play with.

    No,

If you are willing to cherry pick your typed ignores in text chat, you could do the same exact thing in voice chat.

Or leave voice area chat and just listen to your group or guild.

Ignoring people on an ala carte basis can already be done in voice chat so why waste all that dev revenue just so you can type ignore rather than press the ignore option?

What if you need to ignore both area chat and guild chat because there is one person on each channel blaring inaudible music like they're something? Then you won't have comms with anyone at all. Happens almost everyday on my end.

Yeah not everyone wants to listen to background noise, anoying people or a bunch of people talking all game. also it's messed up for deaf or mute gamers not to have a text chat.

As to how text chat would make it diferent about rude or antagonizing people, /ignore. I prefer by far having a line of text coming every 10 seconds that I can ignore, than having a guy repeat in my ear every 10 seconds, which I can't ignore. Gold spammers, I would add to ignore list so I know I wouldn't have to deal with them again.

I think you replied without even reading the post I made, because seriously, the first time I read your reply, if it wasn't about the battlefield reference, I would've thought you replied to the wrong person...

I have people who try to send me text messages in battlefield. Text is too slow and ends up aggravating the rest of the voice chat using team. I know the same thing will happen in dungeons or PvP here.

    No,

If you are willing to cherry pick your typed ignores in text chat, you could do the same exact thing in voice chat.

Or leave voice area chat and just listen to your group or guild.

You seem to take the wrong approach. If it's a few ppl, mute them in chat. Prob solved.

If you have guild members who you don't have a relationship with enough to ask them to change their behaviors then you would want to develop a relationship OR leave the guild.

There should always be an option to mute annoying sounds and people without leaving a guild or cutting off comunication completly with the person or the entire guild/zone.

This is why text chat is needed. Voice only is not efficient.

@mrskinskull @newblacksmurf guild chat is pretty pointless unless you only play solo when not running with your guild. The way the game is set up is totally inefficient for an MMO. If you're in a group you can't stay updated with happenings in your guilds, and going to dashboard to look at messages is not really a viable option when running dungeons/trials/pvp.

Example: If I'm doing speed runs farming a monster helm, I don't want to be completely cut off from the guild if there's a trials group starting up. I also don't want to tell my group to take a break every 10 minutes so I can visit guild channels, go to my Xbox dashboard to check messages, etc.

Guilds are setting up their own external text chats as a workaround, so this isn't as big of an issue for me anymore. It works, however it's not ideal and is a pretty significant QOL issue for the game. Having a way to stay in the loop and quickly respond on screen would be the route I see to address ESO console's communication shortcomings.

There is already a way to mute individual players. It takes maybe 2-3 secs in-game using the option on Xbox one.
If PS4 doesn't allow you to mute voice using their PSN build into to the game then your issue is with Sony.

To be sure...hit menu...triangle...right bumper and (in recent voice interactions) select the name, go to their PSN page and mute

The game needs a way to mute annoying sounds without cutting of communication with the person or persons completely.

    You're skim reading....
The console itself does the function that you're asking ZOS to add in (already)
You need to use the console in respects to what is allows.

IF the PS4 doesn't allow this then that's a Sony issue and not a valid reason for ZOS to add text chat as a feature.
I do believe that the PS4 allows you to mute by player. I'm not sure if you need to leave the game to do so.

*There is no need to repeat yourself...just read what Im writing and do it in the game. You are trying to add in another function that doesn't exist. There is not text chat so mute voice...keep playing.

Also, if they are annoying you by doing whatever via voice chat, then you can still msg them on console, etc just not chat. I'd suggest lowering your in-game voice volume and not muting ppl if its so important to just not hear them.

    Again...this is a YOU thing

God forbid the game developer give players the tools to fully utilize the voice chat system they implemented, without having to leave the game to do so.

With your logic, since the PS4 already has voice chat, they should have just launched the game with no way to communicate and left it up to the players to use the tools already available.

    Get real.

    Get real.

Are you up to speed with what is and what isn't and why it is?
-basically are you clear that ZOS' intent for console was to utilize the social aspects built into each console and not to develop duplication or cause confusion over what should be use vs what the console offers.

What exists is based on the console manufacturer and their ideas on how their customers should enjoy gaming.
ZOS is respecting Sony and Microsoft so that their game is not limited by ZOS but instead it evolves as the console changes occur.

*HAVE YOU watched and listened to the two ESO Live episodes fully in my signature.
This is all explained to us there....its not my logic....please go to the source

    Yes
An obvious choice. No text chat was a very stupid system from the start.
