Memory potion quests affecting the current time?

So..... i'm just a little... confused, how does this even make sense? Had this been addressed before?

For context, i'm doing daggerfall quests in A'likr desert, the main quest story there is fighting the undead and one quest has me join a tribal people but i must drink a 'memory potion' to 'relive' the past events of a past king.. but i don't understand why there's a multiple choice ending solution for a 'memory' Am i mistaken or did i somehow time travel and change history again like with the werewolves? If i let the king fight that corpse then the king is exiled, but if i order the brother then the brother gets exiled and the present time has dialogue for each choice, so which is the true ending because i don't want to alter history.

    The correct answer is...

    Both.

    Multiverse theory.

I always hate forgetting where I put my memory potion.
This post will not take you an unusually long time to read.

You can't alter History, only help the departed come to grips with what happened. What you choose is purely RP and has no effect on the game.

Here is a list of quests with choices, and some do change what piece of gear you get as a reward, or dialogs you have with the quest givers or other NPCs after the quest is finished. But, the overall plot of the game marches on.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Until you open the box, both possibilities coexist at the same time.

Hm. When you choose your option it's not really you, the Soulshriven, making that decision but the other guy. So while it seems that you're influencing history it's really just a decision that was made by someone else a long time ago ... someone who is also played by you, the player (not you, the Soulshriven).
It's like any other choice you make in the game: On a narrative level it's not really you, the player, deciding but the character you're playing. Only in the case of this quest there are three different levels: Player - Soulshriven - the guy whose POV you're sharing.
