My Time with Zenimax Online Support

Over the past week or so I have had multiple communications requesting a name change for my character, this is my experience that has led to a name change being issued to multiple characters of mine except the one which has been requested.

This has been the first time I’ve had any communication with ZoS besides early launch April 2014 when I was constantly getting hard crashes whilst playing the game. During this time they were helpful and resolved my problem. My recent communication between ZoS for the above mentioned topic has been quite hurtful and not a pleasant experience. It has become clear to me that double standards clearly exist within what is supposed to be a “support” system. My first response from them in regards to a name change came and was quoted “I'm really sorry but we currently are not able to change character names if it is not against our Terms of Service.” This response was not quite expected as I am aware; as we all are; of numerous name changes occurring when this isn’t the case. I pushed the issue, even providing evidence of someone changing their name when there was no breach. Once again I was quoted “If it was done then those service representatives do not work here anymore”. “We do not change character names unless that name is in violation of our Code of Conduct. Players are welcome to delete the character they are unhappy with and create a new character.” This clearly isn’t a response that was necessary, I didn’t mention I was unhappy with the character simply the name as it is v14 and has an alliance rank of 18, I simply wish to not be taken for a fool with such quotes which are contradictory to what has happened and without evidence I can only assume is still happening.

My final gripe is the latest response I have received and actions Zenimax have done. Once again it becomes clear that they are now looking for excuses to justify why someone else got a name change and not reasons. “Some customers experience an issue where their friends and guild mates cannot communicate with them as a result of special characters in their name.” Now I’m not sure if the support team play the game, but everyone who does knows that when you contact someone that is on your friends list or from within a guild it is not their character name that is used. It is their “@” name.

Reading the code of conduct I am now aware that the names I called some of my characters were lore related and the claim made by Zenimax is that I cannot use these names because it is their intellectual property and breaches code of conduct. Therefore as a gripe against me I have been issued with name changes on characters I am happy with not the one that I was requesting. Once again a double standard exists, because if this was of the utmost importance to them I would have been told this during the first communication not after several. As I know of many circumstances where this happened/ing without checks or recourse. And it is clear to me that simply for pushing an issue I have effectively been punished. This is not the way that customers should be treated. I have been a member since the games launch, earned by 300 day subscription tiger and love playing this game. But I feel that the management of customer satisfaction should be looked at.
I understand that yes everyone has a job to do, but everyone should be on an even playing field and given the same treatment. Not a slap in the face because someone starts asking a few too many questions for which you have no reasonable answer.

I've been a reader of forums since conceived; never posted before; but I am disgusted how this has been handled and everyone deserves to know.

Name change was NEVER available. The handle @ can be changed and that is through support. But character name is not available to be changed, so what you thought is wrong.

Character name can be changed. They add 2 numbers in front and behind the character name to force a name change. I have a friend who has literally had something like 12 name changes across his 8 characters.

I'm sorry but it is not officially stated anywhere, but I am aware of multiple players that have had name changes. My gripe isn't about being told no, or the fact that having this is one of the most asked features of the game. It is in the treatment I've received and the actions that they have taken. If I had characters that were breaching the code of conduct why wasn't this addressed after one of two emails not after several when I have pushed the issue with them. Besides the fact I mentioned the character name I wish to change it to which as it turns out breaches their code nothing was mentioned or done about it after the initial response.

this has always been the problem with online gaming businesses. It's easy to hide behind a chat medium and treat your customers like dirt. if they had to be face to face with every one of us, they would think twice before intentionally provoking someone. Lord knows that wouldn't be a pretty scene lol

so rare to find game companies that actually care about customer service. they do exist though and there is life after ESO ;)

If you are not happy about something, document it and escalate it to the relevant person(s) within the company with a detailed outline of what it is that has happened, what you'd like the outcome to be and why and where you are unhappy.

It may or may not result in your request being granted, but it has more chance being done offline through private messages than publicly on a forum.

I've always found with any customer support staff that you get out what you put in. A polite request for something that's within the rules generally gets resolved satisfactorily, while requests steeped in frustration or angry demands for something that's against the rules generally don't have the same outcome. Moreover, as P3ZZL3 has said, these things are best pursued privately rather than on a public forum. In the OP's case, with most of his characters already in breach of the naming policy and a frustrated request to change another character's name to one that would also breach said policy I get the impression this was never going to end to his satisfaction. If there's a genuine grievance then deal with it politely and privately, otherwise learn from it and move on.

This couldn't be more true. Request to speak to a supervisor of some sort or something. Log all your e-mails, and approach them. I wouldn't bring it to the forums anymore than this, though.

    ^ This. ^

I've always had a positive response from support because I'm polite on the ticket and often sprinkle the comments with some humour. People respond to this much better than a rant.

The only name changes I've seen are for names that offend the ToS for whatever reason and really, the player should have known better in those cases, anyway. They don't change them willy-nilly for everyone if the name is fine as it is. If they changed it for you, then they'd become inundated with endless requests for the same treatment. They can't do it for one special snowflake and not then do the same for others.

RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend, my Shining Light. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.

I have heard him read the email he sent to support in Team Speak. He sent them polite responses. The reason he is posting is because he feels that he was punished for trying to pursue an issue. His last messages where essentially about trying to understand why support could not issue his character a name change.

From his perspective support acted in this way to try and punish him for asking questions. If the copyright in his character name is really the issue why has he played this long without issue, and why do so many play without any issue?

I have filed a handful of support tickets over past year (missing gold keys, game not loading in, etc) and each time they have responded and fixed the issue within two hours. Amazing service.

Alright everyone!! let us all go and spam customer support with something as useless as a name change over the multiple other issues people could be having with this game. I mean come on, really? If they did that for you just simply not liking a characters name any longer then everyone would be wasting their time asking for this.

I feel that you are missing the point, I am not having a rant about not receiving the name change. This post is more about treatment of the issue and how things were handled. Every response I have had has been all in good time and I get the fact that people have to do a job. But a double standard clearly exists, as this is something which I know for a fact has been granted to multiple people without a problem. Why would they not change all my character names after initial contact? Not after several e-mails when I have pursued the issue? One could say I have effectively been bullied into dropping the issue after a reaction like that.

I doubt very much that you have been bullied or punished for pursuing an issue, I think you just raised the point to a level where they had a good look at it and realised your characters were in breach. Once they're aware of that, they are going to act on it. The reason others get away with naming breaches is because the players don't draw it to their attention.

Alternatively, ZOS may well have realised the situation from the outset and hoped that they could exercise leniency and avoid having to do anything about it, but your persistence meant that in the end they had no option but to enforce the rules.

Either way, if you feel you have a genuine grievance then take it up with them privately and ask to discuss it with a higher tier of support staff than you've had dealings with thus far.

In My opinion ZOS should learn to cater to the customer. Something simple like this Name change business could be handled quickly and easily without breaking any game mechanics. If a paying customer requests something simple that can be provided easily I see no reason a corporation should not provide that service to the customer. It only takes a few minutes to make a happy customer and it goes a long way towards prolonged business relationships. Most corporations have forgotten this. ZOS will probably try to pick on me for this statement but I don't care I can't be bullied.

Just to put everyone's mind at rest as I can see where this thread is going to go, Name Changes are being worked on and I believe they are hoping for it to be in the Aug. 31st Updates.

It's been confirmed by Gina or Jessica in another thread about Race Changes.

Fair enough, it is your own personal experience with zenimax customer support and if you feel that way then I hope the issue is resolved and what you are looking for is accomplished. This may work out for you but who do you know that has had this done? Try having someone forward a copy of the email where a customer service rep changed a character name simply because they wanted a new one. All I can say is if they do this for you then they will have a lot of people writing support tickets simply because they want a name change instead of more important issues that may need to be looked at from players.

I am convinced after my own last dealing with them that they have outsourced customer service.

My experience wasn't "bad" as I only had questions about a second account, but the response read as if English was the second language for the rep.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!
