Starting Mage's Guild quest late...

So I'm a level 43 stamina nb and because of this, I never started the mage's guild questline in the beginning for rp reasons. I've recently decided that I want to respec my nb for magicka and consequently, wanted to go back and do the mage's guild line.

My question is simple: if I'm starting so late, will I be able to simply breeze right on through the questline and catch up in a matter of hours by just doing the quests or am I going to have to go hunt down books to progress my level in the guild? If it's the latter, is there a map I can look up to help find all of these books or are them random?

Mages Guild progression is dependent on finding the books, yes. A good resource for this is http://teso.mmorpg-life.com/lorebooks-locations-map/ . There's also an add-on if you're on PC.

Thanks. Now, there's one caveat of finding these lorebooks. Are they the blue ones that I've been finding scattered around tamriel that pop up "lorebook found" on my UI when I find one? Or are they lorebooks independent of these that are used exclusively for the mage's guild? If they are the former, do they count retroactively? In that, I mean if I've already collected a bunch of the blue lorebooks, will it automatically increase my mage's guild rank or am I screwed out of that exp?

They are indeed the blue ones, and they should count retroactively.

Very nice site! I was wondering how one advances their Mage Guild rank. Thanks!

    Can confirm, they count retroactively.

Started the Mages Guild at VR2 (never really thought about it at all until recently!). Did wonder if all the lorebooks I found previously was now useless, but I've jumped straight up to level 4 before doing the first quest.
