I'm a level 43 in the Aldmeri Dominion on the XBox One, and I'm almost 100% I've beat every quest up to & including "Circus of Cheerful Slaughter"... however I can't figure out where to pickup "Chateau of the Ravenous Rodent". When I speak to Valaste at the Baandari Trading Post in Malabol Tor she just tells me she's trying to unravel the mysteries surround the book I brought her... and perhaps if I were to uncover other such books she'd be more successful... so I'm wondering did I miss a quest? I can't figure out a way to track which Mages Guild Quests I've completed... there doesn't seem to be a listing? Please help, I really appreciate it!!! Any info would be awesome!

You didn't miss a quest - she's telling you to find more lore books. Finding lore books is what levels up your Mages Guild skill line, and you receive quests in the questline based on your Mages Guild skill level.

This is a poorly designed quest in that the books are scattered all over the place in plain sight but quite a few are just out of the areas you're often likely to explore. Without one of the addons the can be a royal pain to find. While you only need to get to level 6, IIRC, to finish the quests to get to level 10 to unlock the Ultimate you need to find every last book in all the zones of your alliance (including the group dungeons), the ones in Coldharbour, and the ones in your alliance zone in Cyrodiil... and some from either enemy zones or parts of Cadwell's Silver. Whereas advancing to the top of rank of the Fighter's Guild just takes grinding zombies/daedra in Coldharbour.

Thank you so much guys, I'm glad I didn't miss anything... what a PITA that you've gotta collect lore books to level up... I mean I like exploring, but that seems a little much!

Ontheleftcoast, do you know if there is an addon for Xbox One to help find lore books?

AFAIK there is no support for Addons on consoles. Your best bet is get a tablet/laptop and open it to a website that shows the lore books. This works for skyshard hunting as well. And keep bugging to ZOS to add support for Addons to consoles.

Tip for lorebook hunting - explore at night, look for the purple glow. Or just do as the others said, and look up some lorebook locations online, make a mental note, go grab them. When you have enough, next time you walk past a mages guild, a runner should come and tell you where to go next!

Whenever you see a random group of mobs in the wilderness (or a broken cart / a deserted camp) make sure to check them out. Same goes for buildings in villages or any ruins with stairs in them.

I would also advise you to look into all those cupboards and nightstands for recipes. It gets old after a while but on your first character you should really explore as much as you can (you'll remember the places later if you make more then one char in the same alliance).

Pretty sure it's based on character level and not reputation with the guild.

I had barely any lorebooks until Coldharbor (I went back and got them all) and I'd already finished the questline.

Just level up your character a bit more.

I just completed this Chateau of the Ravenous Rodent quest last night and after completing it, I went back to the main city to clear out loot for my bank and had some glyphs to deconstruct. As I ran into the Mages guild to go to the enchanting table, a mage appeared out of no where and told me to go back and speak with Valaste. So, I'm not sure if you need to go to the mages guild and then you can advance or if it is based off of Mages Guild skill line. (I'm level 5 or 6 in mages guild and level 38 overall).

No, it's definitely not based on character level. You get the first Mages Guild quest when you first join and are at Mages Guild level 1, you get the second one the first time you're near a Mages Guild location after you hit Mages Guild level 2, and so on. For the final Mages Guild quest (The Mad God's Bargain) you have to be Mages Guild level 5 to get it. You don't need to collect anywhere near all of the lorebooks in your alliance's zones in order to get to level 5 - there are enough lorebooks in your home zones and Cyrodiil to get a total of 1365 reputation in the Mages Guild, and it only takes a total of 400 reputation to get to level 5. You can literally miss the majority of them and still get the last Mages Guild quest before you get to Coldharbour.
