Gladiator pits!

I miss fighting in the pits in the pre-Skyrim Elder Scrolls games. How awesome would a pvp gladiatorial tournament in Cyridil be?

ESO could have 12 or 24 hour 'leagues' which function in the same way as campaigns. You set a home league, get matched with an opponent and fight your way to the top of the league within the 12 or 24 hour time limit. Get a prize (gold, exp or items) for taking part in a fight, a bonus if you win the fight and a grand prize for being the Pit Champion.

Matchmaking should be scaled to the players level, maybe with a two level difference either side. The pits could have different leagues such as 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4,4 etc. Could also mix in a PVE element with animals attacking you in the pit during the fight.

Could also include Gladiatorial skill tree and maybe gladiator pit specific weapons and armor.

Thoughts?

This is an idea that I've been thinking of as well lately, and I definitely agree with some of the ideas you've proposed. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but Arenas have always been apart of the Elder Scrolls lore, even having it's original game named "Arena".

Another thing I'd like implemented that could tie well with an Arena system is a dueling system where people may duel with each other. I realize that a dueling system may invite spammed requests along with immersion breaking, but I have a few solutions in order to prevent this. The solution to spammed duel requests is for there to be an option that will automatically deny all duel requests. The solution for immersion breaking is for dueling to only be allowed in specific areas, an example would be the Arena.

I apologize if these suggestions have already been discussed before. I played ESO during it's early betas, but never really bought the game until recently so I'm still fairly new to the community.

Overall, I definitely agree with many of the ideas you've proposed Bash.

Yeah you are completely correct, I loved the arenas in the pre-Skyrim games, for some reason they weren't included in Skyrim at all, which is a shame! I loved how in Oblivion the Arena had its own quest line with the pale orc :)

A dueling system in the PVE areas would be fun, just walk up to another player, throw your glove on the ground and declare "Sir, I challenge you to a duel!" lol!

I like it too, but ESO isnt balanced around 1v1. Maybe 10 vs 10, could work but even then people would whine about imbalance issues, in 10 vs 10 game its not hard to see whos OP and whos not. Or then it needs some system to balance teams with PVE, go figure.

I guess that's what decent level based matchmaking could fix; I know that you'll still get some players who are very good, but there is the argument that if they are the best in their level range then they deserve to be pit champion?

I'm not sure if I'm accurate in saying this, I'm no PVP expert :P

OMG yes! This could be such pure fun. At least allow it to be done within the player guilds. That way there is no Leaderboard (which always leads to people glitching/cheating just to see their electronic name with some sticker... I mean virtual make believe number by it). Sadly with today's gaming world you really have to think like that or your game will be ruined by glitchers and exploiters.

    @Septimus_Octavius
Sorry but I can't get behind the Duel System for the very spamming you speak of.

Without a doubt, I'm standing with the best way to handle the gladiator pits would be to keep them in player guilds. This way all the rubbish could be handled and monitored "in-guild". Plus it would bring a Spartacus vibe as which guild is the best "ludus" to fight in.
Queen Ayrenn build that wall around Summerset.

Maybe in matchmaking getting a headsup about the class of the next opponent, which brings in a totally new strategic layer.

It's like: Ok, going to battle a sorcerer, I am a DK, how to counter it. While on the other side the very same calculations are going.

That would be a game of wits in the very beginning setting up skills and gears and tactics, rotations, just to see everything fails or scores how it was or wasnt planned. Trying to guess the probabilities of the other character's skill setup, weapon setup just to face something unique. Seeing that you are going up against a NB, and the chances are you get a rogue type character are higher, setting up for that, just to realize you are matched with a tanky NB, and you can scrap your strategies and improvise on the go.

I'd be really on to that. :)

I like the idea of the Pit League board to be set out like a tree thing, not sure what they are called. So you'll see your potential opponent ahead of time.

This image is rough idea, I just found it on google images haha.

Matchmaking doesnt help if some classes and skills are better than others. To balance this game around 1v1 takes tons of work, probably impossible, especially when need to balance it for Trials, Vet dungeons and mass PVP too. ESO was designed to be mass PVP game. Theres lots of arena/duel/small scale balanced MMORPGs out there, just play them. Rift for example, they have own team for such things. I watched how things went in Rift for 2 year, and they just went back and forth with everything, just a waste of time.
