On creating a nightblade caster/bloodmage

Hello all,

After trying my hand as a stamina nb for awhile, I wanted to change things up and try something a little more unconventional. Since I wanted to try a caster type character and not have to start all over, I stuck with my original toon and just respecced into magicka. So far, I have to say, I'm really enjoying my caster (dps) nb. The added survivability is great, even at the cost of my burst potential. I enjoy the survivability more because I've soloed up until this point. I'd like to get an opinion on my build and possibly gather some critiques and suggestions from the community to help me out. Any advice is appreciated.

My build so far: Lvl 44 dunmer NB

Bar 1: Resto staff
Inner light
Structured Entropy
Swallow Soul
Siphoning Attacks
Crippling Grasp
U: Soul Tether

Bar 2: Resto Staff
Inner Light
Siphoning Attacks
Refreshing Path
Grim Focus
Steadfast Ward
U: Veil of Blades

I've maxed out most of the passives from each nb skill tree as well as racials, light armor and restoration. I plan to get healing ward and sap essence on my aoe bar once they unlock, but as for other skills, I can't be sure. I guess I could put impale on one bar as a finisher. Another question I have is the possibility to use a fire destro staff as my racial passives increase damage with fire. I could grab impulse and it's morphs for my aoe bar. Aside from that, I think I've got a pretty good build which was suggested for me when I started. I would just like to increase my damage by a bit. A destro staff, in my opinion could help with that even if I don't use any skills from that tree.

P.S. I'm currently using Torug's Pact gear, but can change it up to something that gives me more spell damage or whatnot. I don't have a lot of traits researched on LA yet, but I'm working toward that now.

If more DPS is what you want I'd suggest dropping Siphoning Attacks since that toggle will hurt your damage a lot. I guess if you like to chain pull groups over and over it's worth the regeneration but if you fight one encounter at a time you shouldn't be running out of magicka before the end of the fight.

Impale is a great finisher and you get magicka back with it so I'd use that. A destruction staff is also a good idea for one of your bars since the attack damage is higher and it has some decent AoE spells until you unlock Drain Power (Sap Essence morph).

I'd also switch to Seducer or Magnus' armor sets if you can. Torug's Pact gear isn't all that great for you.
    For the Covenant!
    Svvord - magicka NB
    Lavv - magicka DK
    Povver - stamina NB
    Psylint - stamina NB
    Yelruc - magicka Sorc

Thanks for the advice. With the news I've been hearing on siphoning attacks on the PTS, I will probably be scrapping it from my build as well. I will also try to get the magnus armor set once I get 4 traits on all my armor.

Thanks. I have seen this build before and it looks pretty similar to what I have now. Just wondering if there are any off-the-wall tips and tricks to get more dps output.

Any idea if I should take vampirism? RP-wise it seems to fit since I'm already siphoning the life-force out of my enemies. From what I've read, however the skills and added fire vulnerability detract from going this route. Though, as a dunmer, I've got the racial passives to decrease the amount of damage I take from fire.

It's worth noting that you can mitigate (possibly nullify; trying to find out) the fire vuln with a rune or two if you need to. Though as a dunmer, you probably won't.

As for the benefits of vampirism? Honestly, as a Nightblade, you have better options than Mist Form already, and while Drain Essence is cute, it's not terribly strong. Bat Swarm, on the other hand, is pretty freakin' good for you. Both of its morphs can be useful to a Nightblade, depending on your needs. The big sells in my book, though - especially for your build - are the passive 10% stamina/magicka regen and Undeath, which gives you damage reduction as your health drops below 30/50%, up to a 33% reduction on top of your existing mitigation.

Add Dark Stalker into the mix, and I would say it's probably worth the tradeoff. Especially, as stated, since you're a dunmer. :P
