This post comes as the result of two recent events: 1. a conversation I had with a guildie, and 2. reading the patch notes for update 2.1.
The conversation stemmed from my guildie's dislike of some of the Crown Store mounts because they didn't "fit The Elder Scrolls universe" basically, and I've seen similar comments and complaints made by numerous players over the past year. To those players stuck on this issue, you have to realize that with every new installment of an Elder Scrolls game, the lore, the background, and the story, have changed, broadened and grown to suit the needs of that particular release. And while overall there is a common major theme that is consistent throughout them all, minor details are not going to be consistent. All you can expect and should look for is whether each game is internally consistent. For ESO (now ESOTU), as I explained during my conversation, any inconsistencies between what we see here and the previous TES games can easily be explained by the Great Soul Burst which is the premise for the story on which this game is based. We know things are different, and that's a good thing, because we can play without knowing the story's end.
For point #2, as I was reading the next update's patch notes, and seeing some of the major changes coming up, I thought back to the conversation I'd recently had with my guildie, and imagined Molag Bal orchestrating these changes through his manipulation of the Mundus, rather than the more mundane (and obviously factual) changes made by the developers at ZOS. I imagined it, not just in terms of the big things, like daedra swarming all over the Imperial City, but in smaller things, such as the effects of the planemeld creating minor changes in the effectiveness of our racial and spell-casting abilities. That last was even discussed in the recent Loremasters Archive: Effects of the Daedric Invasion, with a Q&A with Gabrielle Benele.
So, with that as preface, I had the thought that many of these doubts and concerns could be assuaged if ZOS addressed them during these major updates. And being a fan of their cinematics, I'd really like to see every major update get its own cinematic, to illustrate some of these major changes and bring a continuity throughout the game's life cycle. Eventually, we could play cinematics back to back and get a nice story of Tamriel progressing along its struggle with Molag Bal.
Yeah, I'm asking ZOS to do more work than they already are. I'll buy some more Crowns to make up for it. Anyway, if you got this far, thanks for reading.
