Chatting and Kinect. Even if I don't use chat, can people still hear me? How do you chat with others

I have seen this in another thread and posted a question there but it never got answered. I don't chat with other people. Can other people hear me, or should I say my son when he is on his 360 talking smack (he gets loud) when he games? I see a small dot with a circle with my gamer tag. I am starting to think that is the xbox picking up the sound in the living room.

So how do I turn it off so others can't hear my son talking smack. I guess that can be really annoying and didn't know about this feature at all.

Also if I am alone and I want to chat with others, all I have to do is just start talking and see if someone will answer? This is a first for me, so what is chatting adequate?

Go into the console settings and disable "chat with Kinect"

    It's a check box.
All other functionalities are not changed.

Proper etiquette for chat on Xbox one is to use a mic/headset that came with the console or to buy one and always keep the mic muted until you plan on speaking.
The button glows orange when on mute
-third party headsets work too if you have the stereo adapter for Xbox one

Press to speak and depress again to mute.
Ppl will appreciate this and so will you as no one will ask you to
Mute yourself nor will they auto mute you

It's a great idea for all games

Well, unplugging the Kinect will stop the Chat for sure, but that is not convenient.

There is supposed to be a way to mute chat so you don't hear it or people hear you, probably in Options in the game somewhere.

I am sure there is also a way to turn off the Kinnect from the Console Control Panel. I don't know as the Xbox1 I bought my dad did not come with the Kinnect.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Thankyou NewBlackSmurf. I did it. I was looking in the options for ESOTU, didn't know there was Kinect settings as well.

    Thank you again.

Now that is answered and I don't make a new thread, do you think getting a good headset is worth it for playing ESOTU or should I just turn chat on when I am ready to chat with others? Right now I still like playing solo.
