Basically it has taken the view that it has a concept. In this case it is going to be a wholly immersive world where the user experience is one where the player is plunged into the world of Tamriel and everything is designed to enhance that experience and most tellingly not take anything away from it.
Sounds great doesn't it.
However a bit like prog rock the style is remarkably more important than the substance. The guitars and keyboards and beards could all perform magnificently however is lacking all the bits that, well, make music good and functional. I mean 20 minute synth solos are ok but gimme a riff and a hook now and again damnit.
ESO has the immersion and it has a good feel to it. But it lacks all the things that make an MMO an MMO.
No damage numbers.
No sense of xp gained from mobs or quests.
No minimap
No text chat.
No universal auction house
No automatic placement of groups in instances on pop.
(I would add a poor group finder but tbh most mmo's struggle here and most of the time I personally put it down to every derp wanting to roll dps)
These are not just annoyances that take away from the sense of being in a living breathing world. They are the tools that are used by players to get a sense of if their build is correct. If they are wasting their time questing or farming mobs. Being able to see where they are going without having to stop every two seconds. To be able to adequately communicate to form groups, sell things and coordinate pvp and communicate with guildmates and find guilds. To be able to find and sell items in one convenient place. And finally to ensure that everyone knows that an instance has popped and that everyone who wants to go in goes in or the instance doesnt start.
Having a concept and a sense of direction and immersion is good. Just dont sacrifice all the things that make it work.
Not everyone wants to be Rick Wakeman.
You give me a chat box ZOS and I'll start giving you my money again.
