Any real life crafters? =P

Everyone's got a hobby, right? Anyone out there make some interesting stuff when they're not busy slaughtering the masses in cyrodiil?

I try to make it to the renaissance festival once a year if I can, havent been in about two years now after moving to a new state but I plan on attending the next one coming up. I used to work primarily in leather/fur armor and outfits, but this year I'm starting to get into mailling (creating chain and scale maille armor). Also done some jewelry pieces for my wife and friends with chainmail rings. Here's a few shots:

Do you make your own scales or do you buy them pre-made at ye olde armour shop?

I order the scales and rings from www.theringlord.com
I've made my own rings inv the past but it's far too time consuming to do by hand.

I do wood working as a hobby, and enjoy it a lot. I've been to a couple blacksmithing sessions near where I live, but like in the game if you don't mine the ore yourself you're spending a pretty penny on materials =P

Yea, this outfit is a big, expensive project. The materials for the scale/chain mail are pretty pricey once you get into the amount you need for a full chestpiece (At least 1000 scales, so far I've used probably 200-300 and it's not even looking close to done). So far I've purchased 1,250 rings and 600 scales, Have about 300 rings left and 300~ scales.

Once I get the torso made out of scale/chain, I'm going to be adding these leather pauldrons over the shoulders/neck:

And I'll also be adding leather gloves/boots, possibly with either scale/chain or fur accents, not sure yet. Going to be using basic black pants and a black gambeson underneath as padding. I'm still thinking about doing either tassets or thigh armor out of scales as well, but I'm not sure how it will look at this point, so that will come last.

Also looking into getting this bad boy for the sword to go with the outfit:

It's a German Grosse Messer ("Big Knife"), two handed sword designed like a scimitar or falchion - single edged with a slightly curved blade. Almost 4 feet long overall, with a 9" grip. Still trying to work out how i'm going to add a back mounting for the sword, since it will be too big for a hip belt.

Finally finished the shoulder straps tonight. Each strap is comprised of 3 byzantine chains approximately 6.5" long and containing 64 rings, with another 22 rings used for each strap's interconnecting sections and connection to the scales. That's a total of 428 rings used in the shoulder straps alone, and for now I'm out of rings and waiting on a new order =P

Your work looks so awesome!

My husband (marcusstratus) and I both do some crafting. He does leatherwork and sewing (and designing his own patterns), and would like to get back into doing things with wood and metal (He's done chain mail in the past). I do some sewing and a little beading, hair braiding, baking... We both like to wear things people would think of as costumes for everyday clothes.

I don't make things quite so realistic with such legitimate materials... but I am looking to do so! I have made chainmaille in the past, and I have a bit of leather that I would like to make some detailed bracers with... but ahh.. it's so hard to start! So spooky!

I mostly just make cosplays and dabble in jewelry making. Hopefully I'll be able to get out of my comfort zone soon! I'll keep up with this thread.. so far, it's already inspiring me to try!
