I'm Regretting I Even Logged In...

I know a lot of people are going to come in here ready to say "This is a goodbye thread", but please wait. It's not even a goodbye thread.

Let me start at the beginning. I logged in at about 4:50 Eastern time and was trying to find a vendor so that way I have enough space to go on a crafting reagent raid in Bleakrock. Well, as I was heading to the bank, a guy, who was Level 3 and fresh out of Coldharbour, appeared before me and proceeded to trade me the following items:

2 Recipes (1 I did not have)
1 Moonstone
3 Somethings (I didn't bother to look)

And asked for 800 gold. Initially, I complied. Then, he proceeded to the worship emote in front of me. At first, I suspected drunk guy, so I consumed the recipe i did not know. However, right after consuming it, I then looked at the other recipe more closely. It was Recipe Improvement 2, Quality 1. How can a guy who is level 3 get a recipe that requires Improvement skill 2? I then looked at the guy and saw him take his armor off. By now, I was starting to suspect this was not a drunk guy, this might be a full-blown hacked account.

I proceeded to try and chase after the guy but lost him. I went afk for a couple minutes to answer the call of nature, but when I came back I found the guy again worshipping me right in front of me.

By now, with armor and weapon gone, a trade that I did not plan to be a part of, and the guy worshipping me like an idiot, I suspected this was more than a drunk guy. I decided to do a quick test. I opened the interact menu and whispered to him the following:

"Sir, please reply to the following question before I report a hacked account...who are you, and what is your intention?"

He proceeded to run off, and I gave a merry chase before I lost him.

I suspect at this point there is a hacked account going on, and, despite how much I hate it, I was unintentionally part of the hacker's plan.

I submitted a ticket, and now I'm starting to regret I even logged in. I'm probably going to hate myself tomorrow for consuming that recipe.

To the person who got his account hacked: I'm sorry. I got your back in this.

To everyone else: I'm an idiot.

Your bank is shared space, and all of your characters have access to everything in it, even if they aren't able to use it or it is higher level than they are. The player you traded with more than likely has other higher level toons.

perfectly normal, recipe drops can often be off-level from you...
I pick up recipes I can read but can't use yet all the time

This actually happened, and the only reason I suspect hacked account is because he initiated the trade out of nowhere, and the guy would not respond to me asking "Who are you?"

So, I'm suspecting hacker. If it's not, then fine. But until we get that confirmed via ZOS, then I'm going to be a little cautious.

If I had dollar for every time that someone pm'd me while I'm grinding or gathering, and I ignore them multiple times, then their next pm is to tell me they are going to report me for botting/hacking etc... Well, I'm still here.....

Just because a player doesn't answer an unsolicited message doesn't mean they are a bot or hacked account. Some people, like me, just don't want to be bothered.

Then how do you explain the trade from out of nowhere? I never got messaged about a trade.

I've done this before when I had a full inventory and a player was nearby talking about crafting...I quietly approached him, gave him all of my extra crafting materials then waved and went on my way.

I don't understand how you came to the conclusion that someone was hacked because they traded you random items and removed their armour. I know quite a few players who do the same thing, or trade and ask for something, it's not uncommon. Likewise, a lot of players get naked and do silly stuff all the time. I seriously doubt a hacker would sit around all day trying to sell stuff, most of which you can find for cheaper in any given trade store.

I feel this is all quite exaggerated, but if this thread helps ease your subconscious a little I guess that's a good thing.

Two things:

1) It's really not that unusual for people to randomly initiate trades in this game (or any game in my experience). I've never really understood why, but you've just given me an answer since apparently some people will accept them.

2) If you're unsure if someone is a bot/hacker/hacked account etc. or not the best thing to do is report them and move on. The reporting system isn't automated, it is literally a way of sending a report on their actions to ZOS who will then decide, based on their own expertise, what action to take.

So if you report someone who isn't a hacker they will almost certainly realise that and take no action against them. But if they are then you've stopped them doing any further damage.

Yep. I got my only Dwemer motif (so far) on a level 6 character who has never done any type of crafting.

This could be a lot of things not related to a hacked account. Might be somebody who's intending to junk this character and just wanted to trade what ever items were on it that they could. People do really weird things that can't always be accounted for.

The quest is why would you accept an unsolicited sale from someone you don't know that just came out of nowhere to begin with? Hind sights 20/20 sure but foresight can help avoid these situations all together.

And as far as being paranoid...please don't make me refer you to Sheogorath. That guy is more paranoid than anyone else will (except for maybe Cadwell).

Edit: And as far as I can tell, it's either hacker or very drunk guy. Judging by his performance, I assume first option.

Lets say your character has his own normal life to go back to once you are done playing him:

He heads home, opens the door and hangs his armor up, smiling at his wife with a tired expression.

"Hello Dear," she says, "How was your day? What did you and your human do today?"

"Oh um...well. He traded with another character, then the guy got naked, so he chased after him, only to be worshipped after. Do we have anything to drink around here?"
