Sparkly Bookshelves

Joxin
Joxin
Who doesn't like sparkling or glowing books? Dazzling bookshelves would be even better! Right?

At least, bookshelves should stand out when they hold something you have yet to read and cease to do so once the book is in your collection. I believe that would make searching for new books WAY more efficient, in my opinion.

Thoughts? Other nifty little fixes you have in mind for other things?

Not opposed to having the option for on/off. Out of curiosity, why would you want it off? Once you've read the book the glow/sparkles would leave.

I'd love to watch you in a Ayleid library dungeon with like 100 book shelves...omg you actually have to inspect each one that's such a tragedy!

Nerf bookshelves now! That way people aren't forced to look at bookshelves to get a free skill leveling for...looking at book shelves. So basically you might get a free level up from looking at a bookshelf...but you're too lazy even do that little to get it and just want it handed to you.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the specific book found on a book shelf isn't determined for you until you click on the shelf, at which point RNG kicks in to determine what you get.

    1. I like going through bookshelves, I don't find it tedious and don't need to speed it up.
    2. I'm not interested in completing the collection with some of my characters. The bookshelves would keep glowing forever, which is distracting.

I just don't see the point of going to a bookshelf and picking up a book you've already read is all.

The mentality of a non-developer. Don't understand why something could be useful? BASH IT! ATTACK IT! OMG DEFENSIVENESS! CAVEMAN CRRUUUSSSSSHHH!!!

Never considering that maybe it could serve the purpose of letting players who get turned around in a dungeon figure out which bookshelves they clicked on already and which they didn't, huh?

Naw, that's just more of that anarchist commie entitlement propaganda, there!

Anyhow, OP, I think it's a good idea. lol

    This...

What other ES game hand out the books by telling you where they all are? I would want the option to turn it off too.

If they do this there will be more complaints about dumbing down, because essentially it would be.

I don't see how it would be dumbing it down. It would be just an aide to avoid reading a book you've already read and making sure you didn't miss a shelf. Yeah, some people just tap a bookshelf and move on. Some stand a moment and read. Either way, it helps both types of players IF they want it.

If you don't want that option, turn it off.

    1. It does not take very long to open up the bookshelves. Players do not have to read them and can dismiss them immediately.
    2. I doubt that the contents of the bookshelves are known before they are opened.
    3. People do not know what every book case looks like and often run past them. I think they should run past them and not be attracted by the glowing thing in the corner.
    4. There are times when the player does not have the time to stop and read the books, and should pay for it if they do. Being able to target only the bookshelves that they need removes that.
    5. Bookshelves are part of exploration. Players who do not want to invest the time should simply move on.

support this 100% this would help me in delves and it would allow us to still have the exploration of the game without a direct arrow pointing to where the goodies actually are.

Yes, or worse yet... having to flick the pages until the end of each book to see whether you get the skill perk or not

I suppose we are lucky. The lawyers make us scroll to the bottom of the ToS and privacy documents before we can see that there is no prize in that box.

I don't see how this would be any different from the addons that mark the location of lore books, sky shards, crafting materials, unclaimed quests etc. on your map. Except that the OP is asking for it to be added into the base game since it wouldn't be possible to do it with an addon (at least I don't think it would).

I actually like finding all the books and reading them all the way through, even if they don't reward anything, and I would find this very useful in some situations.

Mainly because (aside from quest/location specific ones) there seem to be very few books in this game compared to the number of bookshelves. I assume this is largely because they couldn't use anything set after the time the game is set, which is a large percentage of the books in other TES games, and they seem to have only created new ones for specific purposes, like describing the crafting system.

So if you read everything you very quickly reach the point where you're regularly coming across repeat books. In areas with lots of book shelves you may find the same 2 or 3 books multiple times each. I couldn't tell you how many copies of 'Sorcery is not Necromancy!' I found in Dresden Keep, but it got to the point where I was making a bet with myself each time I clicked a bookshelf on whether I'd find that or anything else.

In that situation this option would be extremely helpful. After going through the first 5 or 6 shelves and deciding I was sick of seeing that and The Tale of Dro'Zira (especially since they aren't exactly rare in other locations) I could turn this option on and focus on the shelves with books I've not seen yet, at least not on this character.

    Since we're proposing change...

How about all the books on the shelf become readable, like in Skyrim for example, and you have to read every book on the shelf individually to maybe find the one with the free skill leveling! To me that sounds like a great plan because you have to work for those skill level ups a bit and it extends gameplay...its a win/win for the player and Zenimax.
