One- Handed

Hello all, I'm new to the forum, decided to join in after some lurking.
Anyway I wanted to discuss the one handed and shield skill line. Now I'm not too sure if there's another topic around, but I feel like this should be looked into...
Ok so, I've recently made a character similiar to Talos/Hjalti/Tiber. I figure he uses a one handed Sword from his statue in Skyrim.
Problem is, One Handed skills don't work without A SHIELD. More specifically the ones that DON'T USE THE SHIELD. Cannot be used, at all.
I've looked into this and I've read that this wasn't the case before. They patched it to only work with shields. Why? I understand the skill line has skills that use the shield, bashes, and what not. Yet some (I think two not to sure) use only the sword. (IE Low Slash)

I understand its way better to use the shield and you'd just be giving up stats, its impractical unrealistic, Blah blah blah. Why have the option to equip one sword and you can't use the skills, THAT ONLY USE THE SWORD!? Its ridiculous, Ludicrous even.
Sure I'm probably just complaining but if it was possible to use the skills without the shield why change it? Why not just restrict it to skills that use the shield.
I enjoyed using a one-handed character in skyrim, with or without magic in the other hand. Its nice to have variety and the option to use the shield or not.
I feel like I'm forced to Dual Wield or go 2-handed.
I can build a character that uses One hand, and use other skills and perks (Some of the medium armor stuff goes good with this kinda build).
With one sword in hand, I can block, Strong attack and light attack, it just makes no sense when my One handed levels up and I Know I can't use those skills that only use the sword, makes me wonder why we even have the option to use one hand.( Wasted 2 skill points on those skills for them to do nothing! *Sob*)

TLDR;
Why can't we use the sword skills in the one hand and shield tree? Why restrict the option to be a One-Hand character?
We don't need a separate skill tree, or more sword skills in the skill Line.( The Sorcerer class I made is doing fine with one sword just can't use any skills THAT USE THE SWORD) Let us use the sword skills that require no shield. Don't give us the option to use One sword, and then we can't use the Shieldless skills. This is ELDER SCROLLS, even if its an MMO, we should be free to use what we like. Why let us use one hand if we can't even use the skills that use one hand.

Funny thing is that they have a unique blocking animation when you're only using a 1h weapon with no offhand... but they wont let us use any abilities without the shield or an offhand weapon.

I've heard they changed the animations for One-handed as well. I know the first two skills, Low Slash, and Puncture only use the sword. You don't need a shield to swing your sword a certain way. If we can't use skills that only use the sword, but we must equip the shield to use them, then just make us not be able to attack without the shield then. We're already half way there since we can't use the Sword skills in that tree.

I agree, puncture and low slash should both be usable without a shield.

Ultimately, though, you're still going to be gimping yourself by not using a 2h weapon or an offhand item. You'll be dealing less damage and have less enchantment/trait/set bonus slots without anything in that offhand slot.

I understand completely, about gimping myself. I don't think it matters since at 15, I'll have another skill bar to use another weapon. Also other perks that will make up for it. I just want to be able to use Low Slash and Puncture without having a shield. I don't want to always be forced to use a shield. Sure its impractical not to go sword and board, but atleast I have the option to not use the shield. Especially when theres two skills that don't require the shield at all.

We should have a skill line for just one handed with no offhand. Call it fencing and give spell damage bonus for freeing up your off hand.

If you ever plan on doing anything more than questing at an overleveled level, then just trust me when I say that it will matter.

We do have a skill line, we just can't use the first two skills, we need shields for them. What we shouldn't be restricted to are the skills that require shields.

With the right build and and good equips I think its viable sides, most of the time I go to areas waay out of my level are with groups or to travel and give bites.
