Press J & open the journal or whichever controls are applicable for console. Generally you should head for the starter island of alliance you're tied to.

Arrows over the head of NPCs show a quest is available.

The first quest you should take is the closest to where you leave the location you come to after leaving the tutorial area.

If you follow that one first, before anything else, it will take you to a starter area.

The game is friendly to learn as you go as long as you don't attempt to do city quests before doing your starter region quests.

Poor documentation for the game, but that's really a reflection of real life - no one gave us a manual .. besides no one ever reads the manual anyway
Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater - how at first it's alright and you can handle it, and then as it gets closer and closer to the time when you must breathe, how urgent the need becomes, the lust and the hunger to breathe. And then the panic sets in when you begin to think that you won't be able to breathe - and finally, when you take in air and the anxiety subsides...that's what it's like to be a vampire and need blood.

The Imperial horse is now in your Collections > Mount .. just activate it.

You used to have to buy if for 1g, now you don't.

And you want to go to your Starter area first. Should be a quest giver to send you to a boat somewhere near where you came out of the prison.

I almost said, "press U," then remembered they were on a console.

But, yeah, anyone with a black shield/arrowhead/weird abstract icon thingy over their head has a quest for you if you want it. So you can talk to any of them for something to do if you're at a loss.

This is a great question and guessing you are new to the Elder Scroll Series? If you are that is actually more awesome than you may think.

The best thing to do is pick a direction and go. Really let yourself become that character and live in that world.

Just allowing yourself to be "another person or thing" is what gives Elder Scrolls games a great release from the stress and worries of everyday life. Just go where you like. But enjoy it.

Most important thing -- do NOT try and rush through the game. Will only be doing yourself an incredible disservice. All the Elder Scrolls games are about spending months of real time in a fantasy world.

if you're on Ps4 just wait about six month or so when they finally release the xp potions. Then you can use those to level up etc. For now I'd just craft and enjoy the story from quest etc.

I know the feeling, my first MMO was WoW and when I started playing, I was not one bit familiar with the concept and mechanics of MMOs, I remember training my skills to lvl 5 and then being lvl 13 with lvl 5 skills and wondering why on Earth am I so weak and get killed all the time. Took me a couple of months of trial and error before I got the hang of it, but boy, was I overwhelmed by what an MMO can offer. (I'm talking Vanilla WoW here, not this current abomination.)

Actually, if you go through the prison then yes, when you wake up the Prophet will be there talking at you. He will tell you where the Harborage is and it will appear on your map. You leave the room or go on deck of the boat and talk to the person very near who has an arrow overt their head. If you skipped the prison, as you can do after the first time through, you are only level 3 instead of the 4 or even 5 you come out of the prison as. In that case you won't see the prophet just the first quest giver. The prophet doesn't show up until you hit level 4.

I started as an imperial. I just woke up in some room. I did eventually find a guy who sent me to the docks. Now I'm on the island.

I'm a dragon knight, I have a few ability and skill points to spend, but I don't know on what. I spent like 45 minutes trying to beat enemies with my fists till I realized I was given a free sword.

Reminds me of an NCO who was used to playing games like Call of Duty. I gave him a PS3 version of Fallout: New Vegas, and it only confused him. He saw the robot, shot at it, and it subsequently killed him.

He told me he wanted a game that told him what to do next. Some folks just aren't meant for open-world games, though ESO is the most on-rails TES game there is.

Unless you have a bunch of quests that are green and close to going grey. This is the problem with tacking the Elder Scrolls name on an MMO...it doesn't really play like either but some bastardized blend of the two.

You're in good shape. Do the quests on the island, it will get you into it. Like everyone said, look for the arrows. Loot as much as you can and use it or sell it. Look for skyshards - white skylights shooting up. Should be 3 on the island.
When you level, use your points on health, and your skills on whatever weapons, armor, or specific skills from the dragon knight skillsets that sound like fun. Levels 1-10 are about staying alive and getting skillpoints.

I really hope this doesn't happen unless its limited to vet ranks. Its already easy to level up prior to that.

Nah, I played daoc for 6 years, wow for 3. Put like 150 hours into oblivion and fallout 3. This game is just confusing in the beginning, plus I was quite drunk.
