Healer question

I'm a newer console player. I have a couple of questions regarding healers. My guild is in need of some more healers and i offered to look into it creating a new character focusing on healing. Should I roll a templar/sorcerer and have a resto staff as primary weapon while relying on class abilities to provide dps, or does it make more sense to roll something like a magicka based NB with a resto staff on the off hand once he gets to level 15? If' i roll a NB, I was thinking of going Altmer for the spellcharge and gift of magnus racial passives while wearing all light armor in order to max the light armor passives for magicka. If I went with templar, I was thinking either Breton or Altmer. Thoughts anyone?

Templer with Resto/Destro staff is the current strong build I know of players using.

You heal as you would but also keep up Elemental Drain on as many enemies as possible to help DPS keep up resources.

Other classes can heal, however Templar is generally you best choice as it has a whole class skill line for healing as well, and the only class skill which is a massive heal bomb to save groups.

Race isn't too important unless you're going for the extreme min/max if so you want to find a race which gives good Magicka so Breton or Altmer as you said. One of the best healers I know though is actually a Nord and she does extremely well.

Everything Tarvy says is spot on...

Templars are the most versatile healers as they have an entire skill line devoted to this.

They are also very versatile & can help others regen stamina, can tank, can dps... pretty much everything in the game really well.

As far as Race.. anything with good magicka passives. Some will say that it doesn't matter, that its the player that makes it... but as you're starting fresh its best to go with the best race... so probably Breton. 10% extra magicka AND their spell cost reduction is a match made in heaven for a templar healer.

Spell cost reduction is currently far stronger than magic regen. This is why I would suggest a Breton over an Altmer.

The altmers dps passive is pretty meh for a Templar because 95% of the templars dps skills are magic damage, not elemental, so the Altmer passive is fairly useless.

Plus Altmers are stuck up... Ayrenn is ok... the rest are annoying! :D

/agreed If you want to be serious about healing, Templar is it. Good news is, they do everything else well too and IMO they are very fun to play class abilitywise.
I'm kind of a small deal!

Templars are the way to go for Healers. Why, you don't need a Healing Staff to be a Healer. There are some benefits to using a Healing staff so you may use one anyway, but I use two Destro Staffs on mine.

If you go the Staff Route, I would recommend a High Elf as they get a bonus to Staff and increased Regen which a Templar sorely needs. Eventually you want 5 Light and 2 Heavy, but until you unlock the 5 Piece Bonus Passives, wear a mix of Light, Medium and Heavy so you get them all leveled. Just in case down the road they make Medium magic focused, and there are several armor sets in Medium that benefit casters for some odd reason.

Anyway, my Templar who is pretty much what I described above is awesome. She hits above her level, like she is doing Craglorn at VR6, she can take on world bosses solo, and most public dungeons and can keep a group alive in dungeons. Basically, Templars are an Easy Button for PvE.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
