Mobile Support for Console Text Chat

When implementing text chat on the console, which will most certainly happen considering the massive failure that area voice chat has proven to be, perhaps a mobile text feature could be added to speed up the process, similar to how certain trivia games in the xbox and ps store allow you to use your phone to play either with an app, or sending txts to a number. Personally, with an app, I use a smart phone to respond to messages sent to me by players in game so that I don't have to dashboard out every time, and because it's far faster to type on a phone than using the screen keyboard. While some will opt to use a keyboard with a massive usb cable to reach across their living room and type, I think it would be easier on a lot of people to allow them to pick up their phone, enter an app, and control their on screen chat box from there.

Just a thought. What does everyone else think?

You might be on to something OP. My knowledge in app development is limited, but I think the major hurdle would be interfacing directly with the game and not PSN or Sony. That's not something that couldn't be worked out though. There might be limitations for some people based on phone account data limits as well. I hope some people with experience in this area can chime in here.

thats actaully a good idea i do the same thing for my xbox live message i use smartglass, but there are such things as usb wireless keyboards ill be using that lol

For consoles sure go for it, for PC/MAC nope don't need the hacking worry.

I want a text chat so badly. This voice chat is horrible, I can't accomplish anything. I miss being able to link to stuff in the text chat as well.

I don't want to use my cell phone, I just want to use a wireless keyboard or a keyboard that attaches to the xbox controller.

I agree. I just want to use my USB keyboard attached to my PS4 like I have for all of my other PS4 games that have text chat. I don't want to have to jump through additional hoops and expense to get a smart phone solely to text in a video game.

Not saying it has to be one or the other, only that it would be nice to allow both. Different people with different logistical preferences. I know a lot of people who are comfortable with a keyboard, however personally it doesn't fit well near my sofa and I hate it on my lap, and therefore would prefer a tablet or smartphone with an app.

I would expect keyboard support naturally, but a phone app would be a great addition as well.

Also someone in another forum (PKLdude) posted a good point which I would like to point out. What do you do if your deaf? -_- Didn't think about that one did you ESO? lol

What does destiny do? What does GTA online do? The sad fact is that almost all console games omit this group.

A phone app is a great solution and could be easily read across the room and wouldn't require a clunky keyboard peripheral.

No fantasy mmo's listed there.

GTA and Destiny are different games and different crowds quite a bit.

FFXIV ARR , Neverwinter , FFXI , etc , directly comparable fantasy mmo's all have text chat.

Just use a keyboard. I don't know about PS4 but I heard that Xbox One is going to support keyboard and mouse. But what about macro?

LoL destiny, even that game had a huge lack of social features and terrible design choices.
You can't even turn the music off in Destiny, that's how obnoxious that game is when it comes to options.

But at the very least it at-least had Damage Numbers. Destiny is an MMO-Light but even then a Text Chat would of done wonders for that game. Too bad they dumbed it down so much.

With second screen technology ZOS could code something like this, both consoles support these features, and all the communication would be client side!
