How do you treat your alt characters?

I treat my alts very poorly and I make sure to starve them all of food and new gear/weapons and I never perk their skills so they are really weak on top of the fact I only put attributes into the worst line for their playstyle.

4 VR 14s that get played in varying amounts, a VR1 and a couple of lowbies. I don't really have a main anymore, just depends on who needs what leveled right now.
I usually pick a 3 character "base" for a game. In this one, it is Xen. I try to stick to lore names but it doesn't always work out that way.
Xendyn Nettis for my Dunmer, Xenlin Kevian for my Altmer etc.
Exceptions are a magicka Breton NB who I was happy to get the name Xenophobia for and my Argonian Templar, Glows With Hope, who I couldn't figure out a proper Argonian name for that included Xen lol.

My one dedicated mule is Mr Bag.

They all take advantage of each others crafting skills and gold is pooled in the bank.

Oh, and I forgot to answer the original question. I've got several vets, but only 2 of them are "finished". My two nightblades I'm currently working on improving my undaunted rank, then I'll be spending more time with them outside of my trials. I tend to share tons between characters but will focus on or two for a while. Lately, I've been using my DK for trials, templar for PvP, and my nightblades for dailies.

At any time I've got one main character for questing. Characters I leveled previously help them buy a mount and supply them with gear and sometimes stuff to deconstruct. OTOH, my questing character tends to be the one making money and gathering supplies.

All of my toons are the Dionysis sisters (a naming convention I have used since early SWG days, literally if you type Rylana Dionysis into google youll find me in multiple old games)

Rylana, Kailiana, Minerva, Lyzara, Victoria, Bryanna, Dannika, and others

Then I have The Catman Rises just because, and also Believe What You Like, just because as well.

My templar is roughly named after a character in Stormlight Archive, my DK is just a play on Braveheart, and then I've got others named after real people (Lionel Richie, Charlie Furbush, and Jose Altuve).

got 2 mains, after I lvl'd my second character I play him equally often as my first one, but both are self sustaining for the most part like gold, crafting maths go into the bank and used when needed

I got 7 char made, only 2 reached en lvl, ones around lvl 40, 2 others I currently use for extra storage, but all got their own apropriate name, backgroundstory, the whole nine yards, I just cant go through all the lvl'ng anymore xd

    My alts are just mules.

I left them 250g of pocketmoney and handful of lockpicks and they are supposed to take care of themselfs.

I have enough of game with one main character and thanks to caldwell gold/silver i can check whole tamriel. I dont need "playing" alts and didnt chose to make them (the opposite what most people do, play with several VR characters in diffrent factions and then complain that every time there is increase of lvl or something they have to lvl up their alts)

I do tend to use one of them more in pvp than any of the others (just dabbling occasionally on others there), but I use them all for questing and PvE stuff (they are all in my sig). Don't really have bank alts or mules, each of them carries any extra gear sets for alternate builds on themselves and they all have about the same amount of money on them (few hundred K ea.) with rest in bank.

Edit: as to how I name them, they are all named variations of xaraan (that's the name I'm used to hearing on TS and other games for call outs).

I use lore-friendly names. Sometimes it will just be a name that sounds similar to names I've heard for NPCs of the appropriate name, sometimes I'll go to uesp.net to research naming conventions for the race and do it based on that. My main (can I still call him that if he's no longer my highest level character?) is an Imperial with a straight-up Roman name that I picked out for him long before ESO launched. Caius (a variant of Gaius) was a common first name for Roman men, and Drusus was a Roman family name that means strong.

I have 3 alts. Don't play them alot.
But 1 alt is the mother of my main character and the other 1 is the father (pretty handsome guy) and my 3rd alt is my exploitation character, that I use for bad things and for commiting crimes.

Basically... the job of my alts is to get EXP for my Champion Points and to sell everything, so that I have gold that I can give to my bank to improve the life of my main character :)

to get the best from the game start at least one alt for each class, and level asap at level 50; level all crafting at least at level 32, so you can enjoy full hireling and training mount for each alt.
after that, you should role play your character the way you like.

For me the difference between main and alt is how much thought I spent on their backstory, and if I just play the game with them, or am prepared to roleplay them when the occasion arises.

But I am an altaholic... and thus I have all eight slot filled, and all in the veteran ranks. And am grabbing casual c-points just getting them slowly through cadwells. Sharing gametime in order of how much I like the character, so my main is at V14, my secondary V10, one alt at V5 and the others V2 or V1, slowly gaining expees every time I play ESO and crawling up the veteran ranks...
And one of my "alts" I am starting to like enough to consider thinking up more backstory for and declaring a third main... maybe...

Other then that... I use the shared bank to hand down gear as applicable - its hard to get a full set together in one playthrough, but over several characters, you find a lot of set pieces, so the latter alts get better gear with less effort. Also gold - makes no sense not to spend what my mains earn on my alts, yes? Not like there is too much to spend it on anyways once all the horses are bought, all the backpacks upgraded and the bank maxed.

I generally have a purpose in mind when I create a character and how I treat them depends on what that is.

My 'main' is simply the one who got the most fun build: an adaption of what I usually play in TES games (a khajiit dual wield Templar with an even mix of stamina and magicka skills with most attribute points going into healing, and if you think that's bad you should see the Morrowind version).

Then I have a kind of secondary main who has a more sensible Templar healer build so I can play in groups without driving them crazy, and a nightblade because I wanted one, an Imperial dragonknight who is primarily a crafter and a mule who happens to be an argonian dragonknight. I want a sorcerer at some point too, when I can decide on a race, look, name etc.

They're all responsible for finding/earning/stealing their own weapons and armor, or my crafter makes it for them (for now, if I ever get on to high level stuff with special RNG drops I'll probably give them to whoever needs them most) and anything they don't need goes to him to be deconstructed for research or materials. If I have to choose one to get priority for something then it goes to my main, and my second Templar after that, but otherwise they're pretty equal. Except my mule of course, who was wearing his Soul Shriven rags until I was typing this and realised that makes no sense when one of the things he's holding is clothing I've found and don't currently want for another character.

The end result varies greatly but I always give them a name which seems appropriate to me, and I aim for something lore appropriate or which can pass for it at first glance (but I have to admit that's secondary), for more 'minor' characters I'm also liable to go for something mildly amusing, if only to me.

My mule is fairly straight-forward: he's called Holds-All-Stuff (Holds-All-Things was taken). My crafter is a bit more subtle. I made him an older, heavily scarred guy which lead to a backstory about him being a (mostly) retired adventurer, and he's an Imperial so I called him Sagittam Ad Genu. Because nothing rejuvenates an old joke like a dead language.

My Templar healer (a Breton) is called Danielle Aurorel which is a name I've been using since Ultima Online, and the lastname references an even older character, and my khajiit Templar is called Danika Aurorel which is a name I used randomly in another game and find amusing ever since I found out Danica means morning star, since the lastname means dawn star (latin aurora: dawn and quenya elen: star).

I have 4 mains varying between VR2 and VR 14. (one of each class)

I tend to run them in streaks.

I'm currently running my XBox only char at VR7 to get cheevos... because my VR 14 has done most of them already and didn't count on transfer. (had all but emperor and 6 zones partial fishing zones).

Though my V14 will probably get the fishing one because he is about (3/4 done).

My crafting is mostly spread out. though everyone has maxed provisioning and associated hirelings
