Restoration staff animation and cast-cancelling question

So I've just started a magicka nb and figured I'd roll a resto staff as my main bar. As soon as I picked it up, it just feels awkward to me compared to other weapons--even destro staves. So here are my questions:

1. Is the animation for the destro staff heavy attack supposed to be channeled? On a fire staff I picked up once, it's like the staff *** back and shoots a couple of fireballs at the enemy. With the resto, it's just a beam traveling from my staff to the mob. Am I doing something wrong? Yes, I am a noob!

3. On the same token, it doesn't seem like the resto staff has a light attack, unless it's just a partial heavy attack. I can't just flick my right trigger (I'm on X1) and expect to see a blast of magic shoot to a mob. Is there such a thing as a resto light attack?

3. Since I'm on console, I've never really truly understood animation cancelling or light/medium attack weaving in this game. I kinda have it down for bows, but it's still a little iffy to me. It seems that some skills cause the animation to follow through to a full heavy attack (I'm looking at you, bombard), while others trigger the animation cancel perfectly (like poison arrow). Can anyone explain to me how it's supposed to work and also how to do it on a resto staff which appears to be a channeled attack?

Cute :) No, this is intended. The heavy attack of the restoration staff is a beam. It ignores blocks and cannot be dodged. It's the fastest heavy attack in the game and restores the biggest amount of Magicka of all staves.

The light attack is some kind of quick beam, but it is considered a projectile.

Magicka Nightblades use the restoration staff because of Healing Ward. Most magicka NBs are shield stackers and use Harness Magicka and Healing Ward to protect themselves and 1 light attack here and there to keep the Ultimate regeneration active.
    Auri-El is my lord,
    Trinimac my ward,
    and Magnus my mind.

I guess I need to practice with it a little bit. I never saw the light attack animation while using it and thought I just had to hold down the attack button to do any damage with the staff.

Also, can anyone reading this explain how to light attack weave on console?

Light attacks can be canceled by any instant cast spell or ability, which in turn can be canceled by a block/bash.

So it ideally should be LA->instant cast->bash. Unfortunately the controller binds for bash are difficult to weave in there unlike PC where I had a button I pushed for bash, so I tend to ignore the bash portion and just go LA->instant cast over and over.

It works very well on a magicka NB using LA->Strife on a resto staff as strife has a short animation so you aren't punished too badly for not bashing. As a Stam NB it's all about LA-> Surprise Attack.

Edit: For clarification this needs to be done quickly, directly after you pull the trigger for a light attack you should be firing off your instant cast, if you are agile enough you fire off the bash directly after that. Ideally all three hits should be going off in the space of time that a normal light attack would take.

Thanks. I've never seen it explained, just that I should weave LAs to increase my dps. For the longest time, I would hold down the attack button for my bow and just press whichever skill I needed; all the whIle never letting go of the attack button. Ultimately, this worked for a couple of skills, but not for others.

For instance, with poison injection and magnum shot, it worked perfectly--firing a LA with every bow skill I pressed. But for bombard, it caused the full heavy attack animation to run its course before it would fire off the bombard skill. Of course I found out pretty quickly that channeled skills didn't work e.g. snipe.
