Can someone explain to me why there are no children in this game?

We could just start making hordes of really short characters as alts and have them run around and pretend to be children. Would that work?

I have to agree with the poster though. It's a little creepy that there are, apparently, no children or actual couples in the game. It's like going to an all inclusive (including violence and probable death) resort and finding out that there are only 40 year old virgins there.

Even if they did add children to ESO, there would unfortunately be players who would complain that they are immortal and you can't kill them. These are the same players who used to whine because they can't kill dogs or cats in ESO. So, the simplest solution is to not add them in the first place.

You are right. That was a regular complaint in Skyrim. Of course, most of the kids in Skyrim you wanted to kill because they were so annoying (I'm thinking of you Braithe!), but, still.

You'd be surprised at the number of ESO players who would do nothing for hours except go town to town slaughtering children. We've already had threads started over a year ago whining because the dogs and cats in ESO can't be killed.

Yeah quite a large number of people don't want children because they are immortal.
But seriously? If your first reaction to seeing a child in a game is "kill it" seek therapy. Stat!

You will never see children in ESO simply because leaving them out is easier than dealing with the ramifications of putting them in.

If you make them kill-able, the game rating would have to change. If you made them immortal, then sociopaths would complain about not being able to kill them. Eventually, players that live in a perpetual fantasy world would want to be able to either have kids or adopt kids. It creates a ton of issues that are most easily solved by not including them in the first place.

Hardly. Children would be immune to all damage and would be little more than set dressing.

I suspect the reason is more technical and financial than anything else. Models, animation, art, voice overs plus whatever quests they do. Adds time, effort, and storage requirements, and it might even impact performance.

I highly doubt that's the reason. They had plenty of time beforehand to put children in the game and hire voice actors.

If children were already in the game at launch, how many threads do you think we would see title "Can we have kids?", "Can we adopt kids?", "why can't children in ESO be killed when everyone else can?", "Why can't we create children characters?", "Can I have my 10 kids follow me like a train of ducks through town and annoy everyone at the bank?", etc....

Like I said, it's easier to just leave them out. Children in ESO is never going to happen.

The children in Skyrim are all human and the same model base.

ESO would need different models in different areas or it wouldn't look right. The most probable reason is they didn't want to spend the extra development time on them, including finding voice actors for them. (Similar reason all the skeleton morphs look the same.) Maybe they'll add them down the road, around the same time we get housing or spell crafting, but not any time soon.

I still think the NPCs of Tamriel heard player characters were coming, and all quickly hid their kids in hidden basements... ;)

Though I have to agree, I'd prefer to see the game with kids where applicable. Meaning running around in the streets of "safezone" cities, and being there for those couple "rescue my son/daughter" quests (the explenation that mom treats her grown boy as if he was still twelve works once... if it happens again in the next quest, that the "boy" to be rescued seems more like a younger brother at best... and still is incapable of just walking home on his own... it really sours the immersion)

As for those "but I wanna kill the kids" players - f... uhm... forget them. Just make childeren immersive immortal... bonus points for choosing an more immersive way then just making them unattackable (say, 100% auto dodge chance, and then they run away screaming for the guard and giving you a huge bounty for attacking a kid??)

NPC Children + Justice System? No thanks.

Characters in their underpants dancing around NPC children with (in)appropriate emotes? No thanks.

Frankly I'm more concerned about the people who want children in their games than I am about the lack of children in games.

Completely agree. It's a lot of work (time+money) to implement new models and animations for something that will serve no higher purpose in the game other than immersion/atmosphere.

Rule number 1: never cater to sociopaths. If they want to run around and kill children let them download a mod for Skyrim and go nuts

Besides, the whole argument of only adding something if you can kill/destroy it is tiresome. With that logic there shouldn't be trees because you can't cut them down, no birds because you can't shoot them, no ground because you can't dig in it, no crates because you can't smash them to bits, no water because you can't dive in it (yet), etc.

As for the wanting to adopt/have children, then that is already on a lot of peoples wishlists (in combination with housing), as it was part of Skyrim. Therefore people kinda expect/want it already, even if it may never happen.

All in all, it's not something that is lucrative for them to make (as of yet), but it doesn't keep us from wishing them into the game

Psychopaths are the ones that would support killing children. Psychopath do not comprehend right and wrong as moral views.
Sociopaths are kind of crooked, but comprehend most basic sentiments of right and wrong. A sociopath might lie to you about knowing how to do a 4-person dungeon they never did in order to trick you into letting them into a party, but do not tend to be violent.
Different gradients on the scale of mental illness.

I am a sociopath according to most testing scales. My scores are not high enough to count as full-blown psychopathy, and the tests clearly distinguish between the personality types -- a sociopath is unable to empathize with the emotions of others, but knows right from wrong in a rational manner.
I would not like to see immortal children in game.
Not because I want to kill them; but because I do not want player characters interacting with children in any sort of sexual manner. Within the first 24 hours of ESO's launch, was unfortunate enough to see a player stripped down to underwear performing emotes for lewd purposes at the back of a horse.

It is better to keep children out of the game than have them in it for people to do such things to.
Usually view anyone who asks to have them put in to be in support of seeing such things happen though.

Wait wait wait. Are you saying that those of us who would like to see children in the game are for "pedo"/lewd behaviour towards children? Because I find that outright offensive.

Wrong. It has an M rating. Age of Conan, which has a far higher degree of violence and gore AND actual partial nudity (pixel b00bs) has children in the city hubs. A couple of them are even involved in quests. And they are unkillable. I would speculate that the reason kids aren't in this game even though they were integral to Skyrim is sheer laziness on the part of ZoS who maybe just couldn't be bothered with the extra animation art work required.
