Recipes and Food.

Where can I find recipes? I have recently started provisioning and fishing, my provisioning is still really low because when I find a recipe it uses ingredients that I can never find, I raid someones house and never find a single ingredient that is for a recipe I know.

Ironically, the best source of recipes are Crafting Writs. You get a recipe in each Writ Container when you finish a Provisioning Writ. Problem is, you need to know 3 certain food recipes and 3 drink recipes to do a series of writs. Finding those first 6 recipes is the trick.

Second best place to find recipes is the Guild Kiosks. If your going to be leveling your Provisioning, start searching for the L2 Recipes before you level your provisioning so you have a leg up. Otherwise you will start the recipe hunt all over again when you level up provisioning.

Now if your chasing Writs, remember as long as somebody crafted it, you can turn it in. So, you can buy the Green Crafted finished food or drink if you can't find the recipe. You can find these also at the Guild Stores or Kiosks. Note, the White dropped or loot version does not count.

If your goal is just to level the craft, then just make what you can with what you have. Green Recipes give the same experience (Inspiration) as Blues or Purples do.

For Provisioning Ingredients, Warehouses and Ships are a great source for those. You just have to Launder them before you can sell them. I think you can cook with the ingredients first if they are marked stolen. I put all provisioning ingredients in the bank, so I have never tried.

I find a lot of recipes just in houses and boats, and in the areas with large amounts of crates/barrels to check. Or castles. I always run into the house I started in whenever going past and loot it--almost always a few lockpicks, a few crafting style materials, and a recipe. Not everytime, but usually. I was stuck on the first writ for the Syrah Wylie Wine (or whatever name is), finally found it, and now have found 2 extra of that recipe (even after my alt found it too.) Provisioning and enchanting are the trickiest crafts for me so far. The others are about just spending the time grabbing as many of the materials as you can find.

Guild stores have already been mentioned. I just want to add that many recipes can be bought for 100 gold.
There are so many (at least on PC) that prices fall down. Even purple recipes that made 200k in early days
are sold for 3k-5k. Recipes used for writs have a higher price tag (for now), as writs offer a chance
for the new xp-potion recipe-sheets. They still sell for 80k or more.
Once I was a healer. Then I took a Wrobel to the knee.

Yeah I found an NPC vendor that sold a long list Recipes but I wasn't interested in Provisioning back then so I ignored it, now I am and can't find them. Thanks for the advice about guild stores.

Guilds have to bid every week on the trader, so it might be that they change owner quite often.
Out trader moves every now and then too. Keep to trade hubs like Mounhold, Belkarth, RawlKha...
Big cities/capitals have 5 or more guild traders in the same spot.

I don't understand guild traders at all. Are they only usable by members of that guild? Any time I've checked them, I 've never seen any listings and been told I don't have permissions for anything I tried.

I regularly sell recipes for the "going" rate (whatever Master Merchant suggests) in one of my Trade Guilds. There are usually a sea of them.

You become a member can you can sell there through the bank. You can see listings at the bank for your own guilds, or the kiosks throughout Tamriel.

I would like to confirm something so I don't waste any more time on this: I have never found anything other than provisioning materials and food/drink inside crates & barrels THAT ARE INSIDE caves, delves, etc....is this true, or have I just had rotten luck? When I check these things with my first character, it is always to find: recipes, motifs, treasures, collectibles, etc...thanks if anyone can let me know so I know to only check such with my "foodie" character.

Bumping my above question...do barrels, crates, sacks INSIDE caves/dungeons/etc ever yield recipes or motifs? Haven't found one yet that way, and I'm thinking I won't. Thanks for any help.

I have logged close to 300 hours and not even seen it at Guild Stores or in the wild.

I have found a few recipes inside dungeons. They can be anywhere, although from my experience, backpacks are your best friend.

I'm level 32 and I have my provisioning up to 37 right now. I've been buying some recipes from the guild traders and finding them while questing. My word of advice is to purchase recipes that use items that you currently don't use for anything else. I keep my provisioning items on me (since they are easy to find) and I started paying attention to the stuff I was finding that was filling up my inventory. For example, I grab any food I find. I make everything I can when I come across a cooking fire. I noticed in my inventory that I had a lot of camberries. Apparently, the none of the recipies I had called ofr camberries so I made sure I bought the a recipe that would use them at the highest level I could find.

Secondly, when cooking, make sure you cook the highest level recipes first. They yield the most experience when making them. By cooking them first, I'm sure to cook as many high level recipes before I run out of ingriedients.

Wouldn't hurt to put a point in the skill that doubles food and drinking items crafted. Adds up in the end she you vendor items, also helps when you mak writ recipes.

I think I got mine from Provisioning Writs. Actually, this might have been one of the recipes that converted.

It's annoying - I have some good recipies, lots of greens and a few blue but I can't complete the first provisioning writ because I don't have two basic recipies. I guess I'll just keep obsessively checking those backpacks etc.

And the Guild Kiosks. You can either buy the recipes or you can buy the crafted (Green not White) food or drink. If you do buy it, buy a 10 or 20 stack as you will be asked for the same 3 foods and 3 drinks over and over again.

I always loot every barrel, sack and basket in every delve and dungeon. I loot them everywhere else also... My bank is over flowing with provisioning mats. I found a list of recipes online and a list of the writ recipes for each level... Just googled it. I then ran to every guild trader I knew of and with in a couple days, I had all my recipes. Just be persistent =)

what do I have to do to find Carrot Soup and Golden Lager? Do recipes drop in certain areas? Because I've noticed I have found 2-4 copies of some recipes, and even have blues and 2 purples, but can't find these. And it seems like I've found some of the recipe duplicates in the same town, even the same building.
Does anyone know if some recipes only drop in certain areas?

Try looking around in appropriate leveled areas for the level recipe you're looking for. Check all dressers etc but also look Round the guild traders in those lower areas too. It is random, except they are usually in level appropriate areas.

The problem is finding the Recipes and Ingredients to make stuff. I am level 25 and have level 6 provisioning. I stuggle to find recipes and when I eventually do I can't find any ingredients for it.

I have never had an issue finding recipes. Search EVERY backpack and bookshelf you come across. Also, in the wild, you will often come across abandoned campsites, search those too.

Worst case, recipes are about 300-500g at most guild kiosks.

Regarding ingredients, they are EVERYWHERE. Delves are a great place to stock up as are bandit camps. If you prefer, sneak and steal in most towns can fill your bag quickly. I personally have to be selective when looting as ingredients are THAT plentiful. I am level 25 and starting zone 3. Have never had an issue with ingredients.

If you are on PS4 NA, go to Marbruk and go to the Guild Trader by the Blacksmithing steps. That guild specializes in recipes it seems... I'm a bit biased though :p

I have never heard of recipes on bookshelves. Here is what I have noticed: I was plundering the castle in Wayrest constantly, plus the bank, and noticed I have been getting multiples of a few recipes from there. Hence my wondering about that.
So if I want level 1 recipes, I should be able to look anywhere in zone 1, meaning for DC Glenumbra (plus the starter island and Betnarik(?) the Orc island?) Or is going to the second or third city in that area, such as Aldcroft versus Daggerfall, necessary to get these next level 1 recipes?
{empties lungs spitefully whispering}: Carrot Soup and Golden Lager, I hate thee!
