Guild chat and group chat would be your best options. I don't expect anything from area chat other than "Yo! Anyone want to buy a Motif?" and random horrible music blaring over a kinect mic.

Just to be clear, Elderscrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited no longer advertises itself as an MMORPG, it's now classed as a Themepark MMO.

Again, senseless comments from people who prefer outdated technology for role playing. I am definitely trolling here, but my statements hold as much truth as all this garbage about "no text chat = no MMO and no RP". Voice chat is more than text, not less. It's only your own opinion that it's strange to describe your actions verbally but not strange to write them down.

Log in to a gods-damned computer and start a Hangouts or any other form of group text chat. You can even use a phone to do text communication these days, in case you didn't know.

    Well said, @Egg_Death .

My MMO experience, sans ESO, is all text based. So getting used to voice is a little weird, but not bad weird.

I haven't had ONE experience where I could even tell what the other players were saying.

    Its all static and breathing.

Roleplaying with your voice is far more of role playing than text chat.
VoIP is like Comicon event compared to text chat being like a Comic book or comic article.

As far as side conversations over VoIP ...the same occurs if it were text only but ppl may turn off certain text or on certain text.

I left PC because RP via text is far less impressive to me.
Having experienced RP on Xbox One where a guy was literally signing a musical in town bouncing from one player to another. Impossible on PC.

That's my point of view tho.
I think it's important to keep text chat off console because of what it brings and keep it limited to PC. In the same stance VoIP isn't a must on PC

    Yup.

The reason that text chat became the norm for online role playing in the first place is because voice chat was not a thing. No one knew how to do it in the bandwidth allowed.

Not true. Been using voice to RP since Everquest 1 came out. Had open Cantina rooms in Teamspeak in SW:G.

Typing just became more popular. Kind of a fanfic writer vs. LARPer kinda of devide.

Much like the separated and open world PVP people never get along.

My statement predates Everquest. By the time of your "divide", the text RP was already well established and had already become accepted as an alternative.

-claps and stands in ovation- well said. Table top for life, brah!
Use voice chat to really be your character.

If youre playing a female just narrate her actions and thoughts like you would at the table, don't try to run a weird voice or something.

    Just say something like.
'Cortana enters the tavern and scans the room for the skeevy argonian'

Cortana laughs and says. Blah blah,

    Just like table top.

    As per usual, I agree.

Coming from an actual roleplaying background, speech combined with third person narration is more fluid and fun for roleplaying.

I think once the testers get a taste of actual give and take roleplaying, it may be hard to go back.

I use a pretty good headset and haven't had any trouble understanding people unless they are using the aforementioned Kinect mic. Of course my headset let's me adjust balance of game/chat volume on the fly so I generally just turn it up if someone is quiet.

I haven't experienced a ton of mic breathers yet, but I'm sure there are plenty out there :/

Anywho, anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. We may just always have different experiences.
