People and the Group Finder

As we all know, the group finder has issues.

Some of those problems are related to how the system works, other problems are related to the people using it.

A few weeks back, the group finder (on PS4) was completely not working, making groups of 3 or not grouping ever if you were aleready with 1 or 2 more persons in the group. Fortunately, this has been solved.

Another of the problems that people bring up is how the group finder doesn't teleport you directly to the dungeon in question. It is somewhat of an issue, but it's not, in my opinion, a huge problem when people know how to teleport themselves there.

The biggest problem related to the group finder is the people using it in the wrong manner. A lot of people on consoles are new to the world of MMORPGs, and have no concept of what a tank, a healer or a DPS (or DD, however you call it) is. Along with the fact that no class has a role attached to it, that all results in people queuing on the group finder as the wrong role.

The other day, I queue for a dungeon, and when the group gathers, no one is in heavy armor or has a shield. After doing the dungeon with 3 DPS and a healer (which is manageable), I queue again. In the next grou we end up with not only no tank, but no healer either... The guys queuing as tank is wearing full medium armor and a bow, and the guy queuing as ahealer is a templar (good enough, i guess) but he's not healing at all...

Since that day I've avoided the group finder as much as I could, trying to get tanks and healers among my friends, and using the group finder only to get DPSs...

Most of the problem with that comes from the no text chat, because when people are not using a headset, you can try to help them by telling them how to do it correctly, but they won't hear you. But the problem could be solved in another way. During low levels, maybe in the 2 small zones you start in (bleakrock isle / Bal Foyen in the case of ebonheart), there should be quests that explain how grouping in an mmorpg works.

I'm all for helping my guildmates by showing them, but the game is really not group-friendly in the 1-50 range, mostly because of the "soloable up to max level" mentality that WoW implemented a few years ago. Back in the Everquest / FFXI days, people learned to play as a group early, because they did not have a choice, if they didn't play in a group, they couldn't level up. I'm not saying that the possibility to solo is a bad thing, but if you go that way, you need a way to show your players how to use the functions properly, either in a quest, or in a tutorial box the first time they use the group finder.

Being able to play any role as any class is a wonderful thing and should be kept, but the players must know that when they queue in a dungeon, they must choose a role and stick to it.

Please, players, when you're a DPS, don't queue as a tank or a healer.

Cheers!

I can't believe I'm the only one thinking this is a problem... Did nobody among you lose more than 2 hours at any point by queuing and getting in a group with no healer or no tank? Pretty astonishing, given that it happened 3 times to me in the last 2 weeks...

No, the group finder is pretty useless at lower levels because the players are incompetent. As I go higher it's less of an issue. Get the other players to join the voice chat and coordinate things from there. Many times I have to PSN message them and tell them to join so I can give instructions on where we are going/what we are doing.

Regarding the no tank issue, I play a tank and 9 times out of 10 I get paired with a healer. What happens a lot for me tho is it forming a 3 man group instead of 4 and a 4th person never queues up.

Ditto. Seems like the biggest problem I have experienced.... lack of other people having mics dies suck, but at least when dealing with experienced players you can normally compensate for that

Sure it needs a fix up / and has to be more user friendly. But the starter is, that the players starts using it

I think a big problem is that some may be getting frustrated with the group finder not working and just saying "Screw it" and selecting all the roles in the hope of joining any group as any role. So they can at least attempt a dungeon and not sit there for hours in a queue.

I think if the group finder was fixed and worked as intended we would have far less of an issue with roles.

    Atleast it's one theory :)

Probably, but when ppl queue as roles thay can't fill, all they do is waste everybody else's time...

Fixed? LOL go read some previous threads and check out all the oblivious people claiming that it isn't even broken!
I'm surprised one of them hasn't posted in this thread yet.

How is that even possible? Every Templar healing spell I use heals others. Every Healing Staff skill heals others. Were they only using potions? Jabs?

Keep in mind that 1h and shield isnt really necessary to tank most of the low level dungeons other than bosses.

That being said, people do need learn what is expected of the roles. Since I leveled up my sword and board and heavy armor and started going as a tank, my groups have been much better. Taking one of the essential roles alleviates much of the group finder stress, I just have to get my dps fix from guild groups.

I am on Xbox NA as a lvl 20 Templar healer. I have used the dungeon finder maybe 10 times. Of those times 3-4 of them I never found a group during my play session (usually at least 90 mins long) and the other times it took anywhere form 5-45 min and it formed a group of 3. Of the times it formed a 3 person group, a 4th joined once.

It would be nice if the time to find a group was decreased and if it would form full groups.

I played WoW for a bit as a tank and that dungeon finder never took me more than 12 seconds to find a group. Is it similar in ESO that tanks have an easier time finding groups in the finder? I like tanking and may make an alt tank if that is the case.

Xbox is currently full of heavy armor wearers that thing just wearing heavy armor makes them tough (all classes all roles). A lot of Skyrim mistakes (heavy armor?!?!? with no weight restrictions!?!?! sign me up!) 1 out of 20 people I see are wearing something other than heavy...

People are used to steamrolling stuff with other people. I Have a VR 1 friend who has NEVER killed a mob by himself outside a solo instance. He has either jumped in, or had had his fight jumped in on every time.

So I'm seeing a lot of overland solo in proximity groups of 3-4 bad builds all in heavy (and usually with a 2H) winning by accident and unaffiliated group DPS.

When people hit the actual dungeons and try it, it just doesn't work.

1-50 group finder is also hard because of dungeon scaling. Not everyone is hitting the dungeons at the original intended levels. I had no problems getting bad groups for "any dungeon" but has a lot of issues getting stuff for specific places.

Teaching people how to play is much harder. Heavy armor and 2H isn't the best choice of all classes all the time... also passives are good.

Blocking and dodging is a lost art when your random 3-4 overland people just spam stuff to death.

Did some 1-50 dungeons at VR1+ with guildies this week. Very messy.

    These are my friends:

-VR2 guy wearing level 32 set armor another friend made for him. That's ok, it is heavy armor and that'll be fine for his super stealthy NB.

    - Different Decent NB... apparently thinks soulgems are not useful for anything, nor is food..

-Heavy armor Sorc, wonders why he has no magika (almost all stats in STA for his 2H). He does have his 2 pets though...but has really no idea what they do.

-DK (2hand + heavy) "tank" who thinks heavy armor will be enough to keep him alive with no blocking of any kind. Uppercut beats everything apparently.

-DK "caster" with a resto staff. all magika, mostly DK up close spells and AOEs no heal spells. Wearing level 40 leather at VR1 because a guy sold it to him cheap... because people only want heavy armor. he has no passives in armor.... but as a magicka guy doesn't really matter.

All of them made it to VR 1-3.
    These are people I like.
All of them need to be slapped.

None of them are ready for dungeons.

I'm new to this game, to MMORPGs, and to PC gaming (I played Oblivion and Skyrim though/used to playing Xbox/yes I know ESO is for Xbox now also js). My immediate concern for group finder is that I could not find my group mates once I was teleported into the dungeon. In other words, I used group dungeon finder and it put me into a group dungeon by myself. The side health bars showed three other players but I could not find them. Everyone voted to kick me from the group. I couldn't find any of the other players from the start (from the time the thing teleported me into the dungeon). Anyone else have this issue? While I'm in here.. anyone up for adding me as a friend (should probably use the find a friend thread) but I want to have someone to group game/farm with etc. Thanks.

Honestly sounds like PS4 is missing a patch. There's no significant issues for PC NA except occasional removal from dungeon and queue loop isn't terminating right.

Port to crown as you are in a different instance. Happens sometimes

For other people it sounds like it will take time or implement a mentor or training system. Worst case the community involves so give it time.

Agree with OP 100% I am still pretty new - level 41 on first and only character so far! This is also my first MMO. I have tried to group finder for first undaunted dungeons and honestly a good in game explanation of the roles would be helpful! I think I am a DPS, been following guide on my sorcerer and my 1st bar - destruction staff - has hardened Ward, force pulse, impulse, crystal fragments and inner light: my second bar -restoration staff - has I think inner light couple of restoration staff skills, liquid lightning and a summoned thing. Five light armour one medium one heavy

So I think this broadly dps but not sure. I feel I am missing out on a big part of the game not doing pvp dungeons but I also don't want to be a drag on the group. Plus I queue and queue for the starting dungeons and never get grouped! PS4 UK here. It's frustrating!

    Welcome to the genre!

Technically you're a healer, if you've practised using your resto staff that is... ultimately it boils down to mindset, tanks and healers will know ahead of time that those are the roles they're building towards, everyone else, with the exception of people building as a DD (damage dealer) on purpose will be lumped into the DD role.

Regarding your build, I think you're following one of Deltias perhaps but try and focus on a single role for group content, currently yours has much room for improvement. Granted the guide you're following has been put together to level as many things as possible, the thing is when going into group content you'll be more efficient by focusing on one role e.g if you're gonna heal, use a resto (being a sorc twilight matriach too if you're used to using it) if you're focusing on damage then double bar destruction staves and slot damage skills from the various skill lines. Good place to practise are Dolmen's and World Bosses where messing up has no implications.
