AP and Alliance Rank Questions

Curious, what's a good amount of AP to gain in, say, an hour or so of PvPing? I'm just trying to see how well/poorly I'm doing and if I'm wasting my time. Are there any tips for a mediocre player to advance in alliance rank a little more quickly?

Well, firstly, are you a console or non-console player?

I'm a PC player. Been playing since launch.

VR14, DW Khajiit Nightblade. I try to be DPS to the best of my ability. Frankly, I'm not very good, but I've been getting a little better.

I'm about half way through Veteran Grade 1 (9). It's taken me about a month to get that far.

You can make good ap in cyro in small numbers depending on build and setup, but i you are a newcomer you would do best to try and learn the angles.

i.e. AP gain is mostly about being in the right place at the right time.

Take advantage of Defensible positions, tight spaces, stealth, mobility, and learn how the map works.

People pushign for emp/faction victory want objectives and you can farm them in the process by defending those locations. Find a server where the opposing faction has high population and/or is pushing the map.

Once you get better, you can run in smaller groups (or solo) and you will have the game sense to stay near the action, off your horse, and choose fights that you can win and make max ap. if you like group play, find a group of likeminded people and work out a group strat, see if you can farm the farmers.

Its a good thing you are a PC player, as it gives you the use of add-ons. Defensive/offensive 'ticks' from keeps/resources and outposts will give good contributions of AP to you goal. I take it you have an addon of some kind to inform you of receiving AP?

Keeping an eye of what 'area' you are in helps you be in range of ticks. There is no global set radius from any of these structures, but of the 'map defined area'. For instance, if you were at the West wall of Fare, and ran from the wall, after you pass the rocks you see 'Faregyl Grounds' pop up in the top right hand of your screen. Continuing to run, you'd eventually hit the Fare farm, which would prompt 'Faregyl Farm' in the top right. If you ran all the way back past those initial rocks again, 'Castle Fareygl' would prompt.

A name prompting in this space informs you of the area you just entered. <name> Keep / Outpost or Castle <name> are the keep map areas of which offensive/defensive ticks occur.

<name> Farm / Lumbermill / Mine are the resources of which their respective offensive/defensive ticks occur.

    Offensive tick
When you / your faction take control of something. ie, flip the flags

    Defensive tick
When you / your faction successfully defend one of these areas from enemies. By defend, an enemy player needs to die within the area. Enemies player deaths build up the tick. The defensive tick splits between all those of the area holders faction within that area. After X amount of minutes after the last enemy death in the area, the tick will happen.

Thanks for the write-up @Ghostbane. Let me answer a few more things and ask a few others.

I am not using any addons for PvP currently. My addon list is mostly for trade guilds and locales. I just check my inventory and/or my alliance war screen to see how I'm doing. I typically memorize where my AP was, and then check to see how well I am doing.

What I've noticed is when I think I'm doing well, I'm gaining very little AP. For example, I was fighting between Sej and Alessia and maybe had about 5 kills and contributed to 15. I rezzed a few people, and I helped take Sej. I didn't die and was able to turn in my bounty shortly after. After turning it in, I only gained about 2700 AP, which I found to be pretty low since 1000 came from the bounty. During this time, I was completely solo.

When I'm in a group, I feel like I'm hardly getting hits in or I'm that guy that keeps dying. I recently got TS3, so I'm hoping I'll have a better time finding groups in Cyrodiil though since I've noticed it's largely antisocial on in group chat. But in groups I'm seeing a lot more in terms of AP gain. During an hour or so of playing, I saw about 10500 AP. We weren't taking or defending much, but we did flag some resources. But finding groups tends to be tough. I am in a PvP guild, but I feel like I'm dead weight to them.

So my questions here. What's a fair number I should aim for in AP gain, say, per hour. I don't feel like I'm progressing much, but I can understand moving up the ranks in the alliance war SHOULD be slow (and I appreciate that). But what's too slow? I constantly hear people are farming AP, but I'm not seeing any groups do it that I could possibly join (hah).

And for the offensive/defensive ticks, should I make sure I don't leave that area? Does leaving that area cause me to lose out entirely, or will I get what I earned while I was there? Seems like the former is true, and makes sense why people hang back a lot, and not chase.

Anyway, hopefully this isn't too long. I'm just trying to get a hand of what's good here. I'm no stranger to playing this game. I'm decent in PvE. It's just moving into group and PvP content that is a learning curve for me. Mostly it's because I don't have the availability like some players that seem to be able to be around more. So grouping tends to be tough when I have to leave every hour or so.

Well with my first character ever I made it to Major Grade 1 in 7 months lol. But I became a much better player after that and earned experience in PVP. My second character which I just got to V14 2 weeks ago is now a Luitenant. It's just how well you know how to PVP. (I do a lot of small scale with my friends)

It's common on an active campaign to earn 20 - 30k AP/ hr, to give you a rough idea of what you should aim for. You won't get more than this unless you are either a very good solo player, or you are running in a strong group. The best PvP groups can hit 70k AP an hour if they try.

I appreciate all the info here. Thanks for the numbers, @IxSTALKERxI. Helps put things in perspective for me. I don't think I've hit 30k AP in an hour, but I've been close during some pretty big battles. My first fun experience was on Thornblade in a PUG where I was in a 24 man group pushing the inner keeps. I was probably on for 2 or 3 hours and pulled in about 50k AP. That's been my benchmark. I've never been able to get into a group like that since.
