If you bought the Imperial edition did you feel obliged to make Imperial characters? My first didn't work too well for me, as I deleted my first character, a DK Imperial with 1H+S as it felt very bland shortly after reaching veteran rank 2.. However I am now having much fun with a Imperial NB, luckily I have not yet attempted an Imperial sorcerer, despite liking the look of the gear, sticking to High Elf/Breton for that one.

I planned ahead my character a month or two before release, and blindly followed this template with no regard of the games actual mechanics, which I think lead to the downfall of this character. I used online character builders to achieve this, I had no understanding of the game mechanics nor did I pay attention really until later levels.

Also, is crafting a necessity?

At the moment I've been using builds from Deltia's website, is this a bad thing? Is it bad that I cant come up with a viable build that I don't feel comfortable with? I am into the playing style yet have not been able to implement that as well. Could an Imperial ever work as a mage? I wonder..

Thoughts?

Any race can work well with any class. If you want to make all of your characters Imperials, then I'd say you're certainly dedicated to that race but go for it. That said, Imperials do have stamina and health passives, which inherently makes them great tanks and good for stamina DPS builds. Still, an Imperial Mage is definitely possible.

There's nothing wrong with researching builds, but you're better off finding what you like in-game as opposed to strictly adhering to someone else's build. Consider the set-ups in the build guides, try out a few things they recommend, but experiment with other things as well. Any build you come up with has the potential to be viable for your play style. If it works for you, that's all that matters.

Crafting isn't a necessity, per se, but it's very nice to be able to do. You should have more than enough skill points to put a few towards crafting to try it out.

Play how you want to play and who you want to play as. You can't go wrong with a build you enjoy.
