Streamers vs. Addon authors: Player Psychology

  • gjmgamesub17_ESO
You are comparing two differeht beasts.

Streamers and video makers are a form of entertainment, addons are like buying a tool that you don't really need but it adds a quality of life improvement.

I used to stream on twitch. It was a LOT of work in order to get monetized. Once it happened the work got harder. You were expected to stream a certain amount and keep a certain viewer average. The money from twitch was negligible compared to donations. You got 50% of your sub money (2.50 per sub) and fractions of a penny per viewed commercial (those using adblockers to not see adverts didn't count towards viewers).

I'm unsure how YT works but I know the big money makers spend just as much time editing and producing as you spend coding an addon.

I agree addon makers should get compensation but comparing it to streamers and video makers isn't a good comparison. Not to mention you falsely assuming that what they do is easy.

Could crowdfunding - before releasing the addon to the public - be a method to monetize addons?
As soon as the addon is released people can easily copy it from one another, so the monetization must be done before it is released.

If the addon has been - partially - created the crowdfunding site could contain some vids which show the work-in-progress and with additional goals the addon could gain options. By making such vids the audience gets some kind of connection to the creator as well, as it becomes a bit more personal.

    Just an idea! :)

I'm curious if there is the possibility of building ads into a mod. Maybe a popup or a little window in the corner. Make it closeable with a prompt explaining that keeping it open will help provide you with revenue. Maybe even provide a version without ads for 'ethical' reasons.
No, add-ons don't have any (direct) means of communication with the out-of-game world.

It could show you offline ads. Do not underestimate the power of nagware!

Steam/Bethesda's paid mods fiasco on Steam may as well come back, it's already done incalculable damage to the modding community by turning hobbyists into people expecting payment for something they used to do for fun.

Let's just wait for some company to pay a few players for playing their game then we can all demand that developers pay us instead of the other way around.
