IIRC, the cap on this line is 6 or so. But, you only need to get it high enough to unlock the passives that let you resurrect in place periodically without a soul gem and the one that gives a 5%/10% chance to fill a soul gem on a normal attack.

Once you have those passives, the Soul Trap spell is no longer needed. At all.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I find your statement very inaccurate and misleading. While the passives do help quite a bit. I have all 3 at second stages. Reviving once every hour for free, having soul shatter, and having a 10% chance of automatically filling a soul gem by no means at all makes Soul trap no longer needed.

The consuming trap morph alone is super helpful because not only can I fill 2 soul gems, but I receive 20% (10% for each enemy) of my Health, Magicka, and Stamina.

So I honestly don't see how it's "no longer needed".

There are a few skill lines that only level up when you do specific things.

Soul Magic increases when you complete the main quests, which you get access to once every 5 levels. The Mages Guild skill line increases when you find lore books. I think the other guild skill lines also have special requirements but I don't remember them.

    I was told...

Fighter's Guild levels for killing undead/deadra.
Undaunted levels for doing Group Dungeons.

Soul Magic is on main storyline progression, yes.

Mages guild is on finding lore books, yes, the purple ones specifically. It also goes up when you do Mage Guild quests.

Fighters Guild is raised by killing undead and daedric enemies as well as doing the Fighters guild quests and clearing the dark anchor events.

Undaunted is leveled by running group content and completing group content quests/achievements.

On PC you can just hover over the XP bar to find out how far along you are in it and what activities go towards the line, console doesn't even tell you that they level differently from other skills... it's one of many important things they missed.

    :( It's cause we don't have a hover option on console. :'(

You do know I was talking about the Soul Trap spell itself. Not the Soul Magic Skill Line. There is a difference in the names. Funny how you point out the two passives that I also mention are worth having, then call my comment inaccurate and misleading. So, what is it?

As for the Soul Shatter, that all depends. If you run solo, that spell does nothing for you. So, that one all depends on if you are doing PvP or not. Calling it a required skill is not what I would call entirely accurate. Unless you think giving damage to mobs while your dead is a good thing. Otherwise the usefulness of the skill all depends, but it is hardly required.

And, no, once you have the Soul Trap passive that gives a chance to fill a gem, the Soul Trap Spell is no longer needed, at all. I have hundreds of filled soul gems and have not cast that spell since mid way through the MQ on any of my characters.

I know the difference between the skill line and the spell. Your statement is still overly opinionated, misleading, and in my overlyopinionated opinion, wrong. Kudos to you for your 100s of gem. I can have 100s of gems too. Plenty in the crown store. Plenty in the market.

You're opinion is no longer needed. I feel the soul trap spell is still as useful as when I first got it. All it takes is for 1 person to feel it useful and your statement of it no longer being useful is invalid.

And I find it funny how you've made another stupid comment. I play solo, and I find the soul shatter very useful. So explain to me how it does nothing?

And actually you know what. I'm done with this post. OP got his question answered and your opinion is irrelephant to me and this argument is not constructive or even on topic.
