It almost feel like buying crows once in a while is actually better, right?

Depends on your definition of long run.
The only advantage for a subscription is the experience boost and the eventual dlc--which the DLC will change this stance most likely.
But for now a subscription gives you 1500 crowns a month, so you pay 1 cent (US$) per crown and get an experience boost. Your other option would be to purchase crowns, which their biggest pack is 5500 for $39.99. You end up paying 0.73 cents per crown.
So if your looking strictly at price per crown, your best bet is to purchase the 5500 pack of crowns. It's $5 cheaper than a 3 month subscription, and you get 5500 crowns instead of the accumulative 4500.

That is kinda my point, plus usually these games always have sales on Crows, which you can always wait. Yes, when DLCs are around you rent the DLC, but if for some reason you stop subbing, you lose it.
Crowns will always be better because you can buy them.

That has been my biggest gripe with the subscription. I find it ridiculous that you pay for a subscription to rent game content, but if you ever decide you don't want to pay the subscription, you lose content or have to pay more money for it on top of what you already paid. Depending upon what they decide to charge, I will like just buy it.
Until they give me a legitimate reason to purchase the loyalty program, I'm going to pass.

If you can't afford a $15 monthly subscription, they you probably have other things you need to be doing besides playing video games.
