(obviously I've done the ceremony with both characters present and I know you must both be in the same group and online playing)...
1. have the ring somewhere
2. have the ring on your character's inventory
3. wear (equip) the ring
4. wear (equip) the ring AND other character must wear the ring simultaneously

I have heard that the distance is irrelephant as long as your grouped up and both wearing rings. But that is just hearsay that I can neither confirm nor deny.
