personally I would recommend using your first toon as a learning curve.

The game is very much fun cause of the depth. There are a million ways to level your character and many are viable. The game has a lot of in game lessons where you are forced to learn the "nacks" and actually trying to skip them and listening to seasoned players is a danger. Veteran level builds are very different then levelling builds.
Also, with any build it is important to learn and understand the mechanics.

So best is to play the game and ask questions when you are stuck
