Templar Healer Weapons - Resto Staff + ?

Hi all,

Having a bit of an issue with what my backup weapon/skills should be for a templar healer (magicka based). I'm level 30 so I have one "levelling/solo" bar and one healing bar. I'm currently set up with 5 light, 1 medium and 1 heavy armour. I want to remain as a light armour user for the magicka bonuses. I have 4 options that I was thinking of...

- Destruction staff, to use crushing shock on my levelling bar. However, most of the destruction staff skills seem like they have good alternatives in the dawns wrath/aedric/mage guild line. But i put out some decent damage with the staff, plus it regenerates a bit of magicka. My stamina pool remains untouched however..

- Sword + shield, spam puncturing sweep to heal myself over and over. great for soloing, but quite dull. I don't actually use the sword, the shield is more for blocking and staying alive. Defensive posture is good, but doesn't really fit in with the light armor build.

- Second Resto Staff - just continue using class skills and resto staff to regain magicka

- Bow. Although I have put no points in stamina, id love to know if using a bow is viable at any stage. I haven't unlocked snipe yet. Id prefer to use a bow but not sure if its worthwhile considering i'm magicka based.

Any thoughts from any templar healers would be great, I'm planning on doing PvE and PvP.

I switch between several things, really whatever I want to level up. Though my bars really dont change, maybe one or 3 skills but thats based on the fight, not the weapon im holding.

I usually use 2 resto staffs and my class skills with my VR13 Templar Healer. I have also maxed dest. staff but don't really feel I need those skills that much. Sometimes I do switch just for varietys sake. Maybe the game would feel more interesting with different weapons while soloing. I guess I have just gotten used to resto staffs ability to regen magicka.

When healing in dungeons and other group content I very much prefer two resto staffs as well. The magicka regen becomes essential then.

I also use two resto staffs, for the same reason. I find it works quite well.

For leveling from lvl 1 to VR 14 all you ever need as a Templar is Puncturing Sweep (morphed, magicka based version). There is no other skill which will help you to kill even overworld boss mobs with comparable ease. So create two skill bars, fill Puncturing Sweep therein and clutter the rest of those bars with all other skills you want to lvl. Change skill bars from time to time. To lvl dual wield, bow, destrcution staff etc. skill lvls and skills you do not need to have the depending weapon type equipped at all. You gain exp in skill line and skills just by having the skills on your bar.

I made some annoying faults while I leveled my first char (a VR 14 nightblade) and realized far too late how it sucks, if you reach VR 14 with no quests left (and no really good grind spots in this game to even lvl just skills and skill morphs), but a lot of missing skill lines and morphs you chose formerly as a wrong decision.

My Templar reached VR 14 a week ago and has trained every skill line to 50 or 10 (with exception of PvP and maybe Undaunted) and every achievable skill and skill morph to rank 4. Some morphs I trained even for both morph options and both to rank 4.

This might be a bit boring to depend on just one skill for leveling, but you will be thankful at VR 14 with all skills trained and leveled so that you have all options available to play different builds or change roles from time to time.

My perma-equipped weapon from lvl 1 to VR14 was a staff.

While skilling your Templar skill lines you should soonish train restoration staff and destruction skill lines, if you plan to do instances at a certain point.

If you want to play your templar mostly as a healer you should go for a magicka build and take care all your used skills/morphs are magicka based skills. Your first skill bar should always be cluttered with restoration staff skills (Combat Prayer, Rapid Regeneration, Healing Springs, maybe Breath of Life for Combat Prayer and in addition Inner Light + Structured Entropy from the Mage Guild skill line). Your second skill bar depends on what you may want to do or an ancounter/instance demands. Arrange some Templar support skills there (Luminous Shards, Purifying Ritual, Repentance) or some templar (Reflective Light as an example) and destruction staff / mage guild damage skills. Take a resto staff as first weapon and maybe a destruction staff as second weapon option.

You may play your templar stamina based as a tank type or DD type as a player, but I can't help much there, never dived deep into that sort of build.

For leveling: Resto staff on one bar and Destro on the other. So you level up both weapons and as a healer (and therefore as a magicka build) you can use your Destro straff skills if you need them when you hit VR14 (PvP or dpsing while healing).

For endgame: If you need a special Destro staff skill (crushing shock eg), go with destro+resto. Otherwise resto staff on one bar and dual wield on the other, since it gives higher spell dmg, but without using any of the dual wield abilities.

I take a different approach. I do a full magicka based templar and put a 2h in slot 2. My rotation is

    Dark Flare
    Reflective light
    Critical Charge
    Brawler
    Puncturing Sweep
    Binding Javalin and remaining mobs
    Critical Charge

Sure the crit charge is based on stam and the brawler is really only used for the shield but with this setup it is a mix of ranged and melee and is just a lot of fun. I prefer it to casting the whole time like a "typical" mage.
I'm kind of a small deal!

Thanks guys! I like the idea of the 2h for levelling. I would imagine i would use:

    Brawler
    Puncturing Sweep
    Sun Shield
    Channelled Focus
    Radiant Destruction

I think i'd be pretty hard to kill :)
