Hello Ryan and Rich,
I understand that your teams are currently looking at creating a toggle option, to display, or hide, specific mount customization features.
While I agree that this is necessary, I do not believe it is a deep enough solution.
I have a few future options I would ask you, and your teams, to also consider.
All of the options below would require the following new feature:
New feature: Create an "Equip this mount" option in the collections system.
This feature would allow the player to equip specific, cosmetic pieces on the selected mount.
The feature would also utilize the mount "Preview" feature from the crown store interface, in order to showcase the selected "equipment".
Option 1): In-game gold option:
Let us buy new, cosmetic, mount customization options, with gold, from the Stable Master NPCs.
Saddle bags, barding, tack, saddle blankets, etc.
We need more things to promote earning and spending in-game gold. Currently, there are very few *real* reasons to do either. Promoting this feature through gameplay serves a double purpose: No only do we get goodies, we also desire to earn them through playing the game more frequently.
Option 2): Achievements option:
Create achievement unlocks for some, or all, of the cosmetic mount items I mentioned above, as well as some new options.
Some examples:
An AvA achievement that grants a "Chariot" cosmetic option
A Crafting achievement that grants a "Pull cart" option
A PvE achievement that grants a "Flaming horseshoes" option
An achievement that grants the "Guild Banner" option (a guild banner flag, attached to your saddle, representing the colors, and symbol, of the guild tabard you currently wear)
This method grants the gameplay benefits from Option 1, but opens the door to many more unique options.
These are the type of options that *really* get us customization hounds stoked ... and we will willingly work for these.
In fact, generally, even the most modest of us tends to hunger for those unique "I did that! ... and now I can show it off!" options.
Importantly, on the system side, this option allows for a base control system, which limits the immediate, system-wide, "day 1" availability of these options by removing both gold and money from the equation.
Option 3): Crown store option:
Create cosmetic mount customization options, sold in themed packs.
Since not all players would agree on which pieces would constitute a good "theme", the pieces would still need to be equipped on an individual basis.
This option creates a new, potentially lucrative, revenue stream for ZOS.
However, if this is the only option available, it would miss a significant opportunity to promote additional gameplay, and would risk the PR "fun" of making the company look a bit too greedy.
My personal opinion: In the end, I believe a combination of all 3 options would be the best solution.
Add some of the more basic options, such as color changes, to the stable master, at a gold cost.
Add the truly unique options through achievements, such as the Chariot, Pull Cart, Flaming Horseshoes, and Guild Banner (love this one, btw).
Add themed DLC, Racial, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage's Guild, Fighter's Guild, and AvA Faction packs to the crown store as permanent offerings.
If taken together, the combination of these 3 options would:
1): Greatly increase player agency and individual distinction
2): Increase player "ownership" of their character, and promote pride in what they have accomplished
3): Increase the desire to play ESO by granting new, and much needed, tertiary gameplay targets
4): Create a lucrative new revenue stream for ZOS, without the unfortunate PR blowback associated with "crown store only" items
I hope these are well considered, and as always,
I hope this helps,
