NEWB Alchemy Question

Hi guys, first post here and I swear I'm not as dumb as I sound but I have been looking forever and cannot find the answer to the following question:

How the heck do I eat the alchemy ingredients to learn their first attribute?

I am playing on PS4. I've clicked every button in the inventory, in other ES games all you had to do was click on them...

you have to try to make a potion with them. You don't eat them.

You must combine at least 2 regent with a solvent. If the combination results in a potion, then you will discover a trait for those regents.

The same button that you would use to use a potion. At least that is how it works on the PC.

You are supposed to be able to eat the reagent to learn the first effect. This is a hallmark of TES Alchemy

Basically, ^this. In your inventory, basically "use" the alchemy ingredient, and you should eat it to learn the first trait.

Hmm, I am fairly certain that clicking "x" uses potions on PS4 and I definitely was hammering that button in the ingredients panel of the inventory but nothing was happening. Even at the bottom of the screen where it lists what actions I can take (such as R3 to destroy the item) it doesn't list eating them.

The servers are down right now otherwise I would login to test this. In a few hours I'll check again.

PS. Thanks for all of the help so far guys!

I'll try to test it out at lunch on PS4.. maybe it has to do with collectibles missing their "use" option too? Let me know if you figure it out before I get to try though!

Ok, so I have tested your advice and confirmed that there is some sort of bug or error going on here.

The only options I am given when looking at an alchemy item (rye in this case) are: back, destroy, and actions (actions leads me to more actions: split stack, destroy, and get help).

In contrast, when looking at potions in the inventory I am able to consume them by pressing "x" as you said. No such option is available for the ingredients though.

Is anyone else on PS4 having this problem? When Googleing around no on seems to have complained about this.

Rye is not an alchemy ingredient...it's a provisioning ingredient, and therefore has no traits that you need to discover.

    Oh, you're right, my mistake.

I'm used to rye, corn, etc being an alchemy ingredient like in past ES games but I see that they aren't.

That explains why I couldn't eat them I guess.

    Thanks for the response!

It gets better. As someone said, this game's learning curve is hardcore steep since the tutorials provided ingame give only a very, very rough overview of things.

On the other hand, I still learn new stuff even after close to 15 months of playing. Quite exciting compared to other games where you have everything down after a couple weeks.
