I get this error after the most recent patch. I even tried the repair option and get this error. Does anyone else get this error or can help? Thanks.

I've been seeing this a lot lately. On Windows, what I do to work around it is close the launcher. Then expand the notification area, by the clock. Look for any additional oroborous symbols left over by a past launcher run. Mouse over each one and they'll disappear. When all are gone, relaunch the launcher and error 209 usually doesn't occur that time and I can load into the game. I wonder if those stale notification icons are somehow tied to the error 209.

Dont use the launcher. Just put a link to the ESO.exe on your desktop and use that to get in game.

The ONLY time I use the launcher is to patch. Then I close it and open the game with my shortcut.

Okay it looks like using the direct .exe works. My concern is if the game can't tell what version it's running (which is what the error implies) then what will happen the next time a patch is released? How will it knows it needs to update if it can't determine what version it is?

This is the way I have been doing it for over a year. No problems with game version.

When there is a patch, it simply wont let you log in. It will tell you that you need to patch.

At that time open the launcher, patch the game and then close the launcher. Ignore it if it says anything other than 'play'

Then just open using the .exe

    Hi @Gojak !

Thanks for letting us know that launching from the .exe worked for you. This is a common problem that is reported, and our engineers are aware of it and looking to have it resolved. At this time however, that is the best workaround and should get you in without a problem. Once you run the patcher, you should be able to ignore the 209 error and launch by the .exe without issue.

This error has been happening randomly since 1.6 patch. I have tried all the suggested fixes on other posts... i.e running as administrator, deleting the .version files, etc. There error keeps coming back. I can close out the launcher and relaunch with it not popping up each time, but I guess for now I will just directly launch from the eso.exe file until a fix is actually found.

    Thank you.

I have been having this problem randomly as well after patches. Like the other poster said I just run it bypassing the launcher and it works.

I have done two reinstall so far only to get REPAIR on the launcher. It repairs then 5 minutes after you get the PLAY option if you don't start the game the REPAIR returns...

well look at that! I didn't press REPAIR, now I get INSTALL.

During the afternoon of Loredas, 6 Sun’s Dawn 2e578 a big piece of Aetherius fell to Nirn. It was the first major piece of Aetherius to fall on Nirn in more than five hundred years. It scattered around the world as millions of shards. It was rapidly documented by Lady Cinnabar of Taneth in her pamphlet Aetherial Fragments that "... when three shards meet, they re-form into a silvery prism by unknown process and confer the power unlocked by the merger to a nearby being." The Order of the Black Worm, commonly known as the Worm Cult, reappeared in Tamriel shortly thereafter and some of its members are avidly searching said shards.
In the last week of First Seed 2e579, an arcane explosion occurred in the Imperial City — a night of storms, and trembling terrain. They named it the "Soulburst". That day Emperor Varen Aquilarios disappeared without a trace. His wife, Clivia Tharn, ascended to the Ruby Throne as Empress Regent under the guidance of the Necromancer Mannimarco. Ushering a time of increased instability within the Empire of Cyrodiil which finally grew into “The Three Banners War”.

This works for me ... thanks for the tip
I also only run the game from the .exe and just use the launcher to update.

Myself I can always close and reopen the launcher, then it works fine for me.

I have also been getting the Error 209 continually after the last patch.

I will try the .exe method.

I'm seeing the same, and the workaround so far has been to quit and restart the launcher. Usually after two or three times the error will go away and I can play normally.

Thanks for the tip about launching directly from the EXE file. The default location of this file on my Windows 7 x64 computer is:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client\eso.exe

Players can make a quick link by right-clicking on this file and selecting "Create shortcut" and placing it on their desktop.
